Ukraine war: Russia withdraws troops from Lyman, strategic town in region Putin annexed

Russia suffered another setback during Ukraine's counteroffensive, confirming it withdrew troops from the eastern town of Lyman, within the newly annexed Donetsk region.

Ukraine’s armed forces on Saturday said they had "liberated" five settlements in the Donetsk region and encircled thousands of Russian soldiers.

"Due to the risk to be encircled, the allied forces were withdrawn from Krasny Liman to more advantageous frontiers," Russia's Ministry of Defense said Saturday.

"The Russian troops in the area of Lyman are encircled. Yampil, Novoselivka, Shandryholove, Drobysheve, and Stavky settlements are liberated. Stabilization measures are being conducted there," Serhii Cherevatyi, Speaker of the Eastern group of troops, told a Ukrainian news outlet reported Pravda.

The advancement comes one day after Russian President Vladimir Putin declared a land grab for not only Donetsk but the Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions as well.

...

But Ukrainian forces have been making advances in western Luhansk and northern Donetsk as they inch toward the strategically important city of Sievierodonetsk, which Russia has occupied since June.

Cherevatyi said that some 5,000 to 5,500 occupiers were in Lyman, but noted it was difficult to estimate the number of troops in the areas surrounding the town due to the fluid movement of troops in combat zones.

The spokesman said that some Russian troops tried to unsuccessfully break through Ukraine’s barricade near the city while others had begun to surrender.

Taking Lyman is a significant strategic win for Ukraine but Cherevatyi said the fight to fully liberate the city was not over.

Lyman has served as a major logistics and transport hub for Russian forces and its operations in northern Donetsk, reported Reuters.

Securing the city is the biggest battlefield win for Ukraine since it forced Russian troops to withdraw from roughly the entire Kharkiv region in a major counter-offensive last month.

“Ukraine war: Russia WITHDRAWS troops from Lyman”

So much for them being ‘encircled’ and about to be liquidated, as we hear for the past 2 weeks.

As it is, the (smallish) town is empty, and it’s rubble, Ukraine is welcome to have it.

“do they still need the $12.3 billion in the Continuing Resolution bill from 2 days ago?”

Unfortunately yes. The initial 250K army that Russia launched its invasion with has been obliterated, but Putin is trying again and is building a new army to throw into the conflict.

The result won’t be any better for the Russians, but it will take a lot of RDX to send that second army back across the border.

Yup, all the way.

Pooty-Poot *really, really* doesn’t want to give up the Crimea, but the war in Ukraine won’t be over until the Russians are out.

But the war in Russia won’t be over until Putin’s corpse is lit on fire by an angry mob. That’s a commonplace ending of all leaders-for-life.

The white smoke is most likely A/A missiles cooking off. A/G rockets don't make that much smoke.

I'm guessing that this was an aborted takeoff. Would need overhead pictures to confirm.

Calling up reserves with insufficient training has a cost. Giving them copious amounts of vodka to drown their sorrows also has a cost.

“Ukraine war: Russia WITHDRAWS troops from Lyman”

A lot of Russians died trying to run away from Lyman.

Are those Russians laying in the road just taking a nap?

Ukraine is welcome to have it.

You are finally learning. The same will be true with Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk, and Sevastopol. One by one the Russians will leave, or at least they will try to leave.

“I believe nothing in the press....especially coming out of the USA.”

Then you should travel to Russia, volunteer, and head to the front yourself. You won’t have to worry about media innaccuracies.

Maybe, but it would be smarter for the Ukrainians to let them withdraw than fight street-to-street. Especially without their arms or vehicles.

“You are finally learning. The same will be true with Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk, and Sevastopol.”

I could be like Princess here and keep a record of your prediction, and then use it against you when Odessa is liberated...but then Putin doesn’t pay me as much as those 3-letter operations.

In any case, we’ll see if another 300,000+ Russian troops change things a bit.
