I became a climate activist 16 years ago. Back then, not many people cared about climate change. The eye rolls were audible. Media coverage was scarce, and what little there was glibly included “both sides”. It was frustrating and tragic to see such a clear and present danger and to know that it was still mostly avoidable, yet ignored by society.
I assumed that intensifying, in-your-face climate disasters would serve as a sort of backstop to finally force action. I even hoped that humanity would listen to scientists and start acting before things got that bad. I didn’t think this was too much to expect; after all, the scientific fundamentals are easy enough to grasp.
But things have turned out worse than I dreamed possible. I underestimated the depth and intransigence of society’s collective climate denial.
To understand what an emergency we are now in, you only need to look at a few of the most recent disasters. Hurricane Ian has just pummeled Cuba and Florida. The full extent of the disaster will only be revealed in the coming days and weeks, although first looks are shocking. But we do know with certainty that Ian was supercharged by global heating through several well-understood fundamental physics pathways.
In short, it has been a summer of climate insanity. But even so, this will be, on average, the coolest summer with the least climate chaos for the rest of your life. That is just the nature of trends. It should be terrifying.
Rising global heat is driving all the chaos. About 80% and 15% of global heating is due to the fossil fuel and animal agriculture industries, respectively. So long as these global industries exist, the planet will keep heating and climate chaos will keep getting worse. It’s that simple, and that inexorable.

They were complaining a few weeks ago about the lack of hurricanes this year due to Climate Change.
With Climate Change, you’re never wrong.
It’s not too difficult to understand the rounded, shaped Gulf Coast has been carved by weather, with hurricanes being a prime factor.
Climate change folks are, I feel certain, disappointed they only have one major hurricane to work with this season.
The Spanish galleons sunk in the Caribbean and off the southeast coast of Florida in the 1500’s and 1600’s.
Was there a “climate emergency” back then?
Was there a “climate emergency” back then?
Yes, because the drunken seamen would expel methane from betwixt their legs after having consumed copious volumes of grog. /sarc
🙏
Well I guess one option would be go back to the days before
Columbus sailed the ocean blue and live in that type world &
climate. I’d bet the redskins would be happy to not see dem white
skins come to this part of the world. And look who brought dem
black skins here dem white folks again. Damn whiteys.
I believe that anyone who identifies as a “climate activist” should be fed to the alligators.
Imho.

The author is a data scientist. While he isn’t an idiot, I think he needs to zoom out, a lot, on his set of data.
We are geologically still coming out of an ice age. It has only been 12-13,000 years ago we were in a glacial age. In earth science terms, that is a blink of an eye. Most accurate climate records are several hundred years old. Scientific examination of climate records are less accurate and show cycles of heating and cooling over hundreds of thousands of years.
Should we try to come up with cleaner methods of energy? Sure. But we could clean up the US to a pristine, solar powered world with no methane farting cattle and China’s pollution would still foul the environment.
The problem with extremists is they are so focused on their perspective—they dismiss all others.
“I became a climate activist 16 years ago. “
Fine. Now, which of the predictions and prognostications made all those years ago has come to fruition?
BS Alert
Between 1910 and 1965 16 hurricans classified as major made landfall somewhere in Florida. From 1965 to 2022 the number is six. Which period has/hadmore big hurricanes, befor or after so much increase of CO2??? Before.
Thus, so many who get a voice in the media lie.
Wow, 16 whole years of experience out of all of existence - what a data set. JFC.
