Community, faith leaders in Duquesne tell Oz that level-headed solutions are needed to clean up crime

Sitting with the candidate for almost an hour on Friday morning, community and faith leaders in Duquesne told Republican U.S. Senate contender Mehmet Oz that the reason Pennsylvania is seeing its communities ravaged by violent crime is because of deeply-embedded systemic issues, insisting that it’ll take level-headed solutions — not mantras like “Defund the Police” — to fix them.

In a small activity room at New Birth Baptist Church on Grant Ave, Mr. Oz was joined by church members and activists to discuss solutions to rising crime rates, modeled off a similar roundtable he held in Philadelphia recently.

On the panel was Lenny McAllister, a former Republican candidate for Congress and Penn Hills native who said Washington politicians need to empower young people with a track toward a career, safer communities and a better link to education and resources. For now, they’re in communities like Duquesne where they haven’t seen small businesses thrive in years, Mr. McAllister said.

“We didn’t get here yesterday,” Mr. McAllister told Mr. Oz.

Oz framed the current state of Pennsylvania’s streets — especially in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia — as dangerous and unwelcoming to families. He said New Birth’s pastor drove him around the area and showed him the spot where drug dealers hang out near the school.

Defunding the police isn’t the answer, Mr. Oz said.

“The cost of removing security — inducing lawlessness through poorly-placed ideas — is gargantuan,” Mr. Oz told the panel. “You don’t measure that in dollars. You measure that in years of lost life.”

Mr. Oz, like other GOP candidates across the country, has seized on crime as a key issue ahead of the November midterms, reminiscent of former President Donald Trump’s strategy of labeling the GOP the party of “law and order.”

I visited Duquesne for an informative discussion with African American community leaders who are witnessing rising crime in western PA. With the violence we are seeing on our streets, we need to come together now more than ever. As your Senator, I’ll fight for safer communities. pic.twitter.com/4WjuNuqVVR— Dr. Mehmet Oz (@DrOz) September 30, 2022

Oz doing the work!

Democrat interpretation of what Dr. Oz said: “I’m going to put all your children in prison so they can wear chains like they should! And maybe a few of you, too!”

The one thing about Dr Oz- he’s a fighter. I understand why President Trump liked him so much

I wonder if “level headed solutions” include enforcing the law?

Oz is a hell of a candidate. The most Trump-like.

You can’t fix criminal behavior behavior with government; you need to allow the people to shun them and cut them out of civil life. They can’t work, they can’t shop, they can’t buy a car, they can’t rent, they can’t buy a house. Discriminate against them until they starve in the snow. But you can’t because of the civil rights act; they hide behind it and say you discriminate because of race and not behavior.
