Florida: At least 17 dead from Hurricane Ian, hundreds rescued

At least 17 people have died in Florida due to Hurricane Ian, which pummeled the state on Wednesday and Thursday, a CNN tally of reports from local officials indicates.

However, that number is expected to increase.

The US Coast Guard conducted 68 rescue operations in Florida on Thursday, according to Rear Admiral Brendan McPherson, Commander of the US Coast Guard’s 7th District.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said approximately 700 people have been rescued thus far from the destruction left behind by the storm.

US President Joe Biden told reporters the storm could be the “deadliest hurricane in Florida history”. That pronouncement is likely to prove incorrect, noted The Tampa Bay Times, given Florida’s deadliest hurricane killed at least 2,500 in 1928.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Ian is moving towards the coast of South Carolina and could hit the state around high tide on Friday.

Probably where A7 got their story. You have to go all the way to Australia to get some hard facts.

As a Florida resident this is what happens…. You get a warning there’s a storm coming. You spend bunches of money, sweat your butt off because it’s always hot and humid getting prepared with shutters, boat tie down etc. you try to find where it won’t go to take shelter. So you run off to another side of the state, if you’re lucky enough to find a place, then the forecast gets tweaked and says you are now in the bullseye. The storm misses your house that you prepared completely, now you’re stuck where you ran to. Now to get back to your house is the next challenge. A lot of folks just gamble. I haven’t yet but I am almost at that point.

Biden claims Hurricane Ian could be worst hurricane death toll in Florida ever, and mentioned the 1928 figure of 2,500.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The 1928 Okeechobee hurricane was bad but the Galveston hurricane of 1900 was worse...
https://www.galvestonhistorycenter.org/research/1900-storm 1900 “The hurricane that destroyed Galveston on September 8, 1900, is the nations’s deadliest natural disaster. Although its death toll will never be known precisely, the 1900 Storm claimed upwards of 8,000 lives on Galveston Island and several thousand more on the mainland.”
If one expands this to outside the U.S., there was the Great Hurricane of 1780 in the West Indies which killed about 25,000 but even more recently, Hurricane Mitch in 1998 was worse....more than 11,000 were killed (approximately 7,000 in Honduras and 3,800 in Nicaragua).
If coastal residents had evacuated as advised, there would be ZERO dead, injured, or rescued.
The hurricane had 140 mph winds near the eye at dawn.
Coastal residents who had not already evacuated had at least six daylight hours to drive (or walk) east to avoid the storm surge and the maximum wind.
I’m sorry I have no sympathy for these people. Decide to make your home in a trailer park in southern Florida only miles from the coastline and you didn’t expect this to happen? It’s not a question of if it’s ever going to happen, It’s a question of when it’s going to happen! And you don’t have a common sense knowing that a hurricane is on his way to get out of town when you’re living in a trailer?!
I’ve just heard that it’s heading for SC as a Cat 4. 17 dead in a Cat 4 is probably not unusual or excessive.
Never mind all that. DeSantis had the gall to ship asylum seekers to Martha’s Vineyard, ruining the vacations of their betters, and also refused to close schools or make everyone vax and mask, and shut down the economy, and won’t even let teachers manipulate students into getting their genetalia destroyed or foment a kindergarten race war! This must be punished, so Ian is the worst hurricane in Florida history, and DeSantis has totally mishandled it, because he’s a climate change denier, which is worse than a Holocaust denier or a 2020 election denier! Don’t confuse us with facts.(/s for those of you in Rio Linda)
Somebody with a hair transplant read his teleprompter, which said it will be Cat 4, and so it must be true. You must be one of those January 6 rioters./s
IF only those people would have been vaccinated and driven an electric vehicle, they would have been saved.
Forecast for South Carolina is Cat 1, not Cat 4. See the Ian thread.
I don’t doubt it. They want it to be something huge, Godzilla vs. Tokyo and all. If the storm won’t oblige, they’ll have a talk with it.
See! Global warming. We need common sense hurricane control laws. Those five extra people didn’t have to die. It’s all DeSantis’ fault.
While there will be a few idiotic “hurricane party” types that perished I would expect most of the fatalities will be elderly folks that were not even capable of “driving or walking” without risking their lives in that enterprise.
