After numerous trips to the DR, I discovered the Dominicans look at Haitians as slaves. Haitians would be allowed in for a few months at a time working in hard labor jobs. The Haitians would then return home with what little money they earned.

I’m not Hispanic that I know of.

However, you nailed this reality difference. Great reply based on good observations and realities!:

“It is probably because until the end of the 17th Century, the whole island belonged to Spain-but the part that is now Haiti was ceded to France to settle their disagreement-the French brought over lots of slaves to work their sugar plantations and that came back to bite them in the ass during/after the French revolution when the slaves took over in Haiti-and to this day, they speak French and African creole, many are criminals, lazy and expect handouts from every country in the world-plus the government is totally corrupt-assassinates political rivals and the dominant religion is voodoo. The other side of the island, the DR does pretty well-no president who assassinates rivals, the dominant religion is Catholic Christian, not voodoo, Spanish is the dominant language, etc and the people are mostly hard working, industrious and not criminals. The French probably should have cut their own sugarcane-might have worked out better for them...

Being of Hispanic ancestry, I suppose I may be a bit partial to the DR, but facts are facts...”

Thanks again for your excellent reply based on history, reality and facts are facts!

Several times overs the years, pics have shown up of a aerial view of the Dominican Republic/Haiti border.

The DR side is lush and tropical all the way to the fence.

The Haiti side is just dirt.

The #2 leading country in the world in corruption, poverty and squalor wants a YUGE fence between them and the #1 leading country in the world in corruption, poverty and squalor.

Things that make you go hmmm.

Haiti certainly has its issues, but it's by no means the uniform hellhole it's usually described as:

The side of Haiti you've never seen (part 1)

The side of Haiti you've never seen (part 2)

The side of Haiti you've never seen (part 3)

The side of Haiti you've never seen (part 4)

Irony of ironies is that most Dominicans and Haitians are related by blood - same tribes from West Africa and over a century of Haitian migration means this is a family quarrel.

Most Hispanics are Caucasian-we do come in all shades though-brwn is just a color. I don’t get why blacks want to be called that-I thought African American sounded more equal and better, but that is just my opinion...

Who wouldn’t want the cultural diversity of unlimited Haitian illegal aliens? They have done such a great job on their side of the border. I hear Conan Obrian says Haiti is a tropical paradise .

“What causes the differences???”

The Clinton Foundation is helping Haiti, see how that works?

The Duvalier regime (created and propped up by JFK) literally sold all the timber in Haiti to Japan to make cheap furniture for sale in the West. The topsoil eroded and the Haitian ecology has never recovered. (That’s why the DR is so much greener than Haiti.) The racist Woodrow Wilson sent troops to occupy Haiti, and installed a series of mulatto presidents. The occupation lasted 20 years. When the Haitians rose up against the butcher Aristide, Jimmy Carter forced the new president Raoul Cedras to step down, and re-installed Aristide. The Clinton Foundation in Haiti is just another way for a Democrat president to screw over that country.

It was destruction of Haiti’s forests. The market for mahogany drove loggers to cut marketable trees all over the country, even on steep mountainsides. Haitian chainsaws evolved to 9-foot blades!

Haitian fish traps ran empty due mud eroding from stump-strewn slopes.

Weird that the US has had numerous MLB players from the DR, but I am not aware of any from Haiti though both are on the same island.

I’ve read about the Duvaliers-Papa Doc and Baby Doc-they were straight up criminals, using voodoo curse threats against political enemies and others, as well as outright murder...

But there is no reason why-after all these years-some of that donated money that goes to Haiti every time there is a storm that wets the ground hasn’t been directed for use to re-forestation-there are plenty of experts who know about that-planting 2 or 3 trees planted for each one cut-is used on every tree farm here and has been for nearly 100 years in areas that depend on timber for income-that is how the timber industry is kept sustainable-so the remedy and funds are available to Haiti for erosion control and re-forestation so that their ecosystem will recover-I have no sympathy for the Haitians since they have not taken advantage of the assistance available for that-they need to cowboy up and be responsible for the place they live in-after all this time, they are out of excuses...
