AccuWeather forecasters are honing in on where -- and when -- Ian looks likely to make landfall along Florida's Gulf Coast, bringing with it dangerous storm surge, powerful winds and heavy rain.
Hurricane Ian, nearly a Category 5 storm packing 155-mph sustained winds, was bearing down on the Florida Gulf Coast Wednesday morning, threatening disaster from life-threatening flooding and wind damage and drawing comparisons to some of the most notorious hurricanes to ever blast the state. AccuWeather forecasters continued to hone in on precisely where landfall will occur and have upped the storm’s rating on the AccuWeather RealImpact™ Scale for Hurricanes to a 5 -- the scale’s highest designation.
"There is the potential for Ian to hit as the strongest hurricane on record for the southwestern to west-central part of the Florida Gulf coast," AccuWeather Hurricane Expert Dan Kottlowski said.
As of 9 a.m. EDT Wednesday, Hurricane Ian had maximum sustained winds of 155 mph, just 2 mph shy of Category 5 intensity. Ian was moving north-northeastward at 10 mph, and was about 60 miles southwest of Manasota Key, Florida. Hurricane-force winds extended outward 40 miles and winds of tropical storm force reached 175 miles from the center, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

I’m looking forward to her latest cringing by a gate sobbing at nothing “hurricane photo”.
Or maybe she’ll actually walk out into it.
Does that mean the Tampa Bay hockey team is moving?
I am wondering. Will Masks prevent Ian from spreading?
I blame the guns for this!!!
DeSantis caused this storm by threatening our democracy.
Great point!
Florida’s lack of diversity is attracting storms.
Due to CLIMAGEDDON no doubt.
This storm is going to sue DeSantis for misleading it into moving up and out of Florida and heading North.

The only way we can prevent this storm is by driving electric cars which Ron DeSantis won’t allow us to drive.
Ask the NY transplants “How do you like us now?” NOT a good welcome. Hopefully the newbies heed advice. Don’t venture down to the beach to see the surf.
I suspect those that lean right will know to heed such advice, but those who lean left will tell the authorities, they don’t care, we are going to experience the wind and rain and . . . oops, swept out to sea.
Dear Californians who recently moved to Florida. Is this really what you want? Go back and breathe the free, hurricane free air of California. I would if I were you.
While it’s happening..we can hope.
I wish we had DeSantis for our governor (but I’d settle for him as president if he is the nominee!).
We’re originally from Louisiana, so we had some storms, as well. But nothing with the regularity you all get. Florida has that long peninsula, so it is a target from both directions.
Board up, and take care! Let us here on FR know how you fare!
Looks like it’s coming my way in the NC mountains.
I’m in Charlotte. It probably will be tropical storm strength by the time it gets here. They are predicting 3 to 5 inches of rain here this weekend. If that happens, there will definitely be some flooding in addition to downed trees and such.
De santis didn’t support the bill to reduce inflation. Proof he doesn’t care.
Biden cares.
Biden loves you
Now show him you care and buy an EV.
I get the idea the news media would like nothing better than the whole state of Florida being wiped from the face of the earth. Maybe I’m cynical, but I don’t believe much of what is in the news these days - though I am sure there is indeed a hurricane a-coming. Prayers up for all in the vicinity.
