Process of elimination.
Russia is making money by selling the gas through the pipeline.
Europe needs the gas this winter or their people freeze.
Other parties may have interests in Ukraine that involve neither of the first two scenarios.

The Russians didn’t need to blow it up all the had to do was stop sending gas through.
The Europeans needed it intact for gas when the war is concluded.
That leaves only a few players...
