This whole business about reparations is very complicated.

I can’t see much evidence that the current generation of black Americans are relatively disadvantaged by the fact that they now live in the U.S.A. and not in Africa.

The other complication is that totally different patterns of marriage and procreation would have unfolded among the generations who then stayed in Africa and avoided slavery.

None of the present individuals seeking reparations would exist today, a totally different set of people would exist.

I think it would be a good idea if the American courts ruled that damages can only apply to wrongdoing between living, extant persons, and not theoretical persons on the basis of events in the distant past. There was no doubt wrongdoing involved and that sort of judgement takes place in the afterlife, not in courts of law.

Even as recent an issue as residential schools for native Canadian and American kids runs into those sorts of questions, including, were all the impacts as negative as claimed? We cannot and should not be settling legal questions by consulting far left academics and politicians for their opinions. We need to establish real harm and real responsibility. Just because some group claims some wrong done to them does not in itself prove the matter.

I don’t really get the justification for reparations on a practical level either, what legacy of slavery currently disadvantages a black American? What part of it impacts on their income, job opportunities, or personal happiness? I shudder when I think of the Roman coliseum and what happened to Christians there, but it doesn’t mean I have any case to sue people in Italy for reparations. Nor does it really have any direct impact on my life, other than to realize how awful human behavior has been in the past (and no doubt the present), and could again be in the future.

MAGA supports them. Close the border, arrest or deport illegals, fine or shut down businesses hiring illegals with cash not paying taxes, and promote hiring Americans of any color, blacks included.
