Balkan Ally Serbia Says It Won't Recognize Russia's Staged Votes In Occupied Ukraine

Russian ally Serbia has said it won't recognize the current votes in Russian-held parts of Ukraine that Kyiv has called "sham" referendums, dealing another international blow to the Kremlin's hastily organized effort at consolidating early gains in its 7-month-old invasion.

Foreign Minister Nikola Selakovic said on September 25 in Belgrade that "Serbia cannot accept these results" due to its commitment to the UN Charter and respect for international law, among other things.

Doing so "would completely violate our national and state interests, the preservation of sovereignty and territorial integrity, and the inviolability of borders," he said.

Serbia has kept close relations with Russia in particular to bolster its refusal to recognize the 2008 declaration of sovereignty by its former province Kosovo, which is now recognized by more than 100 countries.

Moscow has repeatedly cited the Kosovo case as an example of Western overreach.

Selakovic and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov signed a so-called consultation plan for their countries for the next two years on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York this week.

It was the first high-level diplomatic document that Serbia and Russia have signed since February 24, when the large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine began.

The European Union's rapporteur for EU hopeful Serbia, Vladimir Bilicik, greeted news of the signing as "a major blow to [the] accession process in the Western Balkans."

"Let’s be clear: [Russia] is mobilizing to attack [EU] candidate state [Ukraine], Russia is attacking EU enlargement!" Bilicik said.

Belgrade backed several UN resolutions condemning Russia's invasion but has avoided joining EU-wide sanctions joined by the bloc's other aspiring members.

The so-called referendums in the Russia-held areas in Ukraine of the Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhya regions have been dismissed as frauds by Ukraine, the West, and the United Nations because they are illegal under international law.

Moscow has suggested it will defend them as part of Russia after the votes.

I remember when Russia said they would help Serbia. They would help their brother Slavs with Kosovo. Never happened.

The raised hand vote in Kosovo in 2008 for independence wasn’t even close to a referendum (which is taking place in Donetsk, Luhansk, etc) went against the Serbian constitution, thus was without the permission of Serbian authorities, and yet was hastily accepted by the west/NATO/EU anyway.

Thus the west/NATO/EU have to rescind their acceptance of Kosovo independence or accept the current referenda in Donetsk, Luhansk, etc.

Biden said the Russia and the world has to go by the “liberal world order” that he claims is “rules based” but their “rules” are no doubt said by others to be hypocritical amd inconsistent,

I imagine Biden’s world view will lead to the countries of the world doing whatever they feel like, and Biden and his kind will have caused it.

Yes, you’re absolutely right about Kosovo. Consistency is key. If one illegal annexation or forced independence is wrong, then all are.

You left out the minor detail that the Kosovo Albanians were being driven out and exterminated when the UN and NATO intervened, UN peacekeepers were captured to be used as human shields, and in one massacre every male aged 14 and over from a small area was rounded up and executed.

The case for doing SOMETHING to protect the Albanians from genocide did exist.

Ah, you’ll say, but that was happening in East Ukr...

But you’d be wrong because the DNR reported to the Kremlin that the killings had ended in 2019. And were still saying that in January this year.

Pushilin and co have never provided even a beermat’s worth of alternative figures to rebut the DNR ombudsman. They never did back up their accusations in February of ongoing genocide and imminent invasion, with any evidence at all.

They’ve also made repeated claims that Ukraine was ABOUT TO do stuff that then didn’t happen because it was never gonna happen. A bit like Blair creating a dodgy dossier to show that Saddam had, and was about to use, WMDs that could hit western targets in 45 minutes.

Basically, Pushilin might as well have said “Ukronazis! Millions of them! All us Russians are going to be dead in a fortnight if you don’t act! The DNR Ombudsman is wrong!”

Pushilin and co also told the Kremlin that the two Mariupol hospitals were nonoperational, had been emptied of patients and staff, and had been converted into Azov Nazi bases. That also turned out to be a complete lie.

No one should trust Russia. Hopefully the Russian people will get some form of a decent government. And not like our DEMOCRAT disaster.
Some here may remember when trade and tourism was big with Russia.
