Saw some dude on a video once who emphasized the point that the spectrum that’s really important is not left-to-right or extreme liberal to extreme conservative but rather the spectrum from totalitarian/authoritarian to complete libertarian/anarchist (with, as in most cases, the ideal some difficult point to find in between). Made sense to me, especially because leftist regimes (I’m looking at you, Brandon) tend to have a natural tendency to drift to the authoritarian end of the spectrum.

One of the problems is trying to fit everything on a single line. One of the best examples was a two dimensional grid with social freedom on one axis and economic freedom on the other. Libertarians and true anarchists (not the brick throwing leftist thugs) had high scores for both. Communists claim high social and low economic scores, but in reality end up low for both. Fascism ends up similarly. Socialism is a little higher on the social freedom score, mainly because they aren't at the crushing all opponents phase yet.

Unsurprisingly, since it was out out by a libertarian group the quiz to find out where you were on the graph skewed people towards freedom on both axes.
