“British” is not an ethnicity, JFTR. Unless you mean the Welsh, who in the Irish language are called “Breatanach”.
There are traditions that indicate that Irish, English, Scottish and Welsh are actually part of the “lost” ten tribes of Israel. Some scholars group them with the tribes of Ephraim and Dan.

A lot of the Protestants in Northern Ireland are descended from settlers from Scotland in the 1600s. By the 1700s many of them were unhappy with how they were treated by England and emigrated in large numbers to North America (where they were often called “Scotch-Irish” or “Scots-Irish”). During the American Revolution they were among the most zealous supporters of American independence. Andrew Jackson is an example (he was born in America to immigrant parents).

Not so much now, but up until 40-50 years ago, you could barely understand the ‘English’ spoken by locals in the Upper Ottawa Valley. Even 25 miles out of Ottawa, the farmers spoke a HEAVILY accented English. Most were of Scots or Scots-Irish heritage, having come to the ‘frontier’ of then, ‘Western Canada’ after the War of 1812.
When the Iranians seized the US embassy in Tehran in 1979, about half a dozen Americans who worked at the embassy but were not there at the time took refuge at the Canadian embassy. After a while the Canadians decided to help them leave Iran by plane which meant fooling the Iranians at the airport into thinking that the individuals were Canadians. That involved learning about Canadian sports teams and learning the Canadian pronunciation of various words where its different from the US pronunciation. They made it through. There was a TV program about it (produced by Canadians).
Yes, I certainly do remember ‘The Canadian Capers. Luckily for the Americans who sought refuge at the Canadian Embassy, Joe Clark (or as I prefer, Joke Lark) was Prime Minister of Canada. There is no way to confirm this, but I believe that if Rocky Waterhole (Pierre Trudeau) had been PM at the time, instead of Leader of the Opposition, I suspect that these Americans would have been turned over to the Iranians, or the Iranians would have found out through ‘unofficial gubmint sources’. Pierre, like his feckless son, was a communist, anti-American SOB.

Hell, Protestants don’t need to worry about Catholics for the simple reason that there no longer are any Catholic Churches or Catholic people in Ireland. The Satan Council (Vatican, 1962-1965) and Satan’s Pope, who’s currently soiling the chair of Peter, have demolished Catholicism worldwide!
Unfortunately, most of the Catholics aren’t Catholic anymore
