I worked in large research laboratories and researchers come from around the globe.
If you excluded non-US appearing citizens the cafeteria could be about half the size or less.
When I worked at Argonne there appeared to be fewer foreign appearing researchers, but at that time there were fewer of everything and congress wanted to shut it down.
At BP R&D my building had Russians! Chinese!, Germans, English. In the main cafeteria, if you paid attention there were probably some Eskimos and perhaps a few Martians.
Just before I retired, one group in the building was celebrating!! Their results were very positive and the lot of them were taken out for a very nice lunch...
I can tell of it now that my NDA is expired and it is public knowledge. They developed a successful COAL TO OIL process which was sold to the Chinese for hundreds of millions of dollars! And soon started construction...
