Ukraine: Russia’s Draft, Setbacks Mean It’s Time for More Advanced Weapons

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to call up 300,000 reservists should prod the West to send the longer-range artillery and more technologically advanced weapons that Kyiv will need to press its advantage in the harsh winter months ahead, Ukraine’s deputy defense minister said Wednesday.

Volodymyr Havrylov’s list is topped by the ATACMS, a missile that can outrange the artillery rockets Ukraine is currently using, and fighter jets, which Washington has been reluctant to provide out of fear that Russia would escalate the nearly seven-month-old war.

“I think after today's announcement [by] Putin, we are closer to a political decision here in Washington, D.C., that Ukraine deserves and really needs to be provided with ATACMS,” Havrylov said at a conference sponsored by the National Defense Industrial Association in Austin, Texas.

Ukraine’s highly successful use of the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, known as HIMARS, has prompted the Russians to move its ammunition depots and logistics hubs more than 100 kilometers from the front lines, Havrylov said. That places them out of the range of HIMARS.

“If we had a capability to destroy the targets of the depots to 100 kilometers [away], it would be a total disaster for Russia,” he said. “That's why we're asking for ATACMS,” which has a published range of 300 km.

Well, I’ve wandered around too.

Philippines for 20+ years, off and on, still live there part of the year.
Most of East Asia. Hongkong - we used to run over there for Christmas shopping every year. Its almost a day trip from Manila. Singapore, Taipei, Seoul, Tokyo; Sydney/Brisbane - about half our relatives are Australian these days.
We used to go to London every year for a while there, as wife and daughter are great Anglophiles. Germany, for business, I had great dealings with Siemens, also Zeiss, and a lot of companies out of the mittelstand. Not a lot of people go to Traunreut! I was just at Dusseldorff last year for some professional obligations. And so forth.

Etc and etc.

Not a lot of people go to Traunreut!

I was there yesterday and I am going back today. Traunreut is about the largest city I will tolerate these days but it has its charms in the old part of town. I have photographs of the town bombed out in the war and now rebuilt.

Six months ago Putin was merely in a war of aggression to restore the old Soviet Empire. Today he is in a war to preserve his dictatorial power. He is in a corner and most dangerous.

We need to strengthen the defense forces of Ukraine.

Also, we need the other European countries to fight the Ruskies.

I think the Ruskies are dangerous but they could lose very quickly.

The Ruskies do not want to fight so the Ruskies are going to Nuclear.

Bozo Biden is a big friggin joke on the American public.

It seems that the Pentagon [likely captured by Big Arms] is in charge of Ukraine Policy.

So Poland can reclaim its old territory as well. Eukraine would be a sliver, probably should be. Biden and son would loose how much revenue?

Both of these men are mere puppets.

And we are not even allowed to know the names of their puppet handlers.

should prod the West to send the longer-range artillery and more technologically advanced weapons "

I agree. We should keep arming Ukraine and make sure they can out gun Ukraine.

Putin is committing genocide against his own people.

Even with 300,000 more troops they are outnumbered and outgunned in Ukraine and Ukraine has better intelligence and better logistics than Russia.

The "Partial mobilization" is open ended. There is no end specified. There is no limit to how many men they will draft.

" I’m not sure if Ukraine needs or should have ATACMS. Putting a few dozen in warehouses on backroads in Poland couldn’t hurt, now could it?"

I agree. We should be stockpiling ATACMS in Poland and other areas in Europe.

We were withholding long range missiles from Ukraine because we didn't want them attacking Russia proper. I understand, that would give Russia the legal excuse according to Russian law to declare war and do a full mobilization.

But this mobilization is open ended, It's not limited to 300,000 so it might as well be considered a full mobilization.

And with Russia about to claim annexation of Ukraine's territories, why continue to distinguish between Russia proper and the Ukrainian territories.

I'd bomb every train and military vehicle coming within 50 miles of Ukraine. There is no reason to wait until Russia's forces enter Ukraine.

We may not have anyone with authority to launch. That may be good but it is definitely bad.
