Regarding mobilisation, Putin can declare it, indeed. But it will be a risky decision. The USSR maintained a massive infrastructure for the total mobilisation which has been mostly dismantled in post-Soviet Russia.

“Yeah! Russians and Ukrainians will kill each other. I don’t care.”

I do. I don’t want to see civilians on either side killed or maimed.

“Some nobody’s Tweet is not news.”

No, it’s not. Be sure to remember that before you post one as such.

“-Russia in Ukraine is confronted with ‘virtually the entire military machine of the collective West...’”

Hyperbole much? If “virtually the entire military machine of the collective West” was put up against Russia there would not be enough room to deploy them.

“The goals of the military operation, according to the president, remain unchanged - ‘the liberation of the entire territory of Donbass.’”

Then why has he gone well beyond Donbas, and is now forcing referenda on cities and areas outside Donbas, with the intent to annex them?

“Mobilization, as Shoigu explained, is carried out to ensure proper control of the already liberated territories of the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics, as well as parts of the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions.”

Thus contradicting his position as described immediately prior to this one.

Ask your questions of the Russians. I posted what their mobilization actually entails to counter all that made up crap that started off the thread.

300,000 mobilization is a significant escalation of this conflict on Russia’s part. Should be enough for the media to write about. But I guess not, they need to act like it is a general mobilization, when it doesn’t come close.

You posted it. Perhaps you are Russia’s emissary?

Also, no mention of demilitarization or denazification, as has previously been claimed was a goal of the operation.

You should go over to Ukraine as a peace keeper.

Thank you, good stuff.
An interesting background that fills in many unexplained questions.

My question was why did they keep thousands of ancient armored vehicles that were far beyond anything resembling a can point?.
Now it fits and makes some sense.

Also now learning that “Quantity has a quality all its own.” may not always be a true statement.

Funny how your mind wanders. I’ve posted news items from around the world. Am I also now King of the World?

Perhaps Vlad is now looking at diminishing returns.

Tell you what: I’ll go to Ukraine as a peace keeper and you go to Russia as one.

What puzzles me is why a Russian army that has suffered minimal losses, done whatever it pleases in Ukraine, and has destroyed the Ukrainian military, needs a mobilization at all.

Haven't the Putinistas been telling us that the war is already over? I could have sworn I've read that from some of our resident Russophiles, and from guys like Scott Ritter and Douglas McGregor. And yet... Russian now season need to mobilize 300,000 more soldiers and increase its War production.

Something here isn't adding up....

Poor logistics, a weak NCO system, and a lack of regular training for reservists are major weaknesses of the Russian army. This “partial mobilization” will generate internal oppostion but little in the way of new combat power. At most, the measure will provide a stream of older, poorly trained men to feed into existing units that have been depleted in the fighting. That may help to stabilize Russia’s front lines, but it will be politically destructive to Putin’s regime.

Putin’s been embarrassed, and his sycophants here on FR look silly, so they resort to childish labels and tantrums. Bullies have always been like that. They can’t stand it when someone fights back, and that was one hell of a surprise for Putin.

They probably kept it because it was cheaper than actually getting rid of it, but also so the rest of the world would believe they had massive reserves of tanks and other equipment.

But I'm betting that lack of maintenance, cannibalization, and theft probably renders useless upwards of 90% of it.

Putting any of those guys anywhere near the front lines is going to be a disaster. They don't have the infrastructure to equip and train them.

Ukraine likely would be in just as bad shape if they hadn't started major reforms after 2014.

Quite true. Ukraine chose to adopt NATO military policies in place of the former Soviet model.
