A Tesla Megapack battery caught fire at PG&E’s Elkhorn Battery Storage facility in Monterey County, California. A shelter-in-place advisory was in place for 12 hours due to fears of toxic smoke from the fire caused by Elon Musk’s battery system, with county officials announcing that even though the fire was “fully controlled” by 7:00 p.m. PT, “smoke may still occur in the area for several days.”

KSBW Action News 8 reports that a Tesla Megapack battery caught fire at the local utility company PG&E’s Elkhorn Battery Storage facility in Monterey County, California. If I’m depressed and I inhale some of the lithium vapors will it cheer me up?

Elon Musk makes great rockets, relying on basically the same liquid fuels and process that Goddard worked out almost a century ago.

Batteries for land vehicles, much less aircraft, are by far a harder problem to solve.

“Robert Goddard and the First Liquid-Propellant Rocket”

Ninety years ago today, on March 16, 1926, Robert H. Goddard (1882-1945) launched the world’s first liquid-propellant rocket. His rickety contraption, with its combustion chamber and nozzle on top, burned for 20 seconds before consuming enough liquid oxygen and gasoline to lift itself off the launch rack. The rocket took off from a snowy field outside Worcester, Massachusetts, reaching a height of about 12.5 meters (41 feet) and a distance of 56 meters (184 feet). It was smashed on impact. Goddard, his wife Esther, and a couple of assistants from Clark University, where he was a physics professor, were the only witnesses.

I believe that’s the third battery fire
at the Moss Landing site. Imagine that you
live aboard a boat in the harbor and are told
to shelter in place.

Uh, isn’t the Pacific ocean nearby? Just dump it in there. It’ll go out after a while.

“You forgot little kids in the Congo mining cobalt by hand so we can virtue signal.”

Only 6% of cobalt goes into EV batteries. More than that goes into batteries for portable devices like laptops and cellphones.

And Tesla and others are going to cobalt free LFP batteries.
