Climate takes backseat in Italy vote despite extreme events

Ancona (Italy) (AFP) – From parched rivers to a glacier collapse and this week's deadly storms, Italy has suffered numerous climate events this year -- but many politicians pay the subject little more than lip service.

Desperate to see some firm commitments ahead of September 25 elections, climate activists staged a sit-in at the Rome offices of frontrunner Giorgia Meloni earlier this month.

They demanded a public meeting with the far-right leader, but police carted them off the premises.

Concern over the spiralling cost of living has drowned out the debate over how to tackle the devastation caused by global warming.

The EU's post-pandemic recovery fund, from which Italy expects to benefit almost 200 billion euros, is heavily tilted towards projects that ease the so-called "ecological transition".

But Patrizio added: "Italy doesn't have a net zero strategy right now... it doesn't even know where to begin."

Marzio Galeotti, environmental science and policy professor at Milan University, said it was "difficult to convince" the public that "environmental sustainability and emissions reduction can be combined with economic growth".

But, he noted sadly, this is true of many countries: "We are seeing a kind of temporary amnesia that is not unique to Italy."

Some of the positive results of Russia’s invasion, the green message is much harder to sell today than 8 months ago.

The energy issues and their importance have been made much more clear to the populations.

It’s interesting when fantasy meets reality in a head on collision. At some point in time those that live in la-la land will become weary of being constantly moved out of the way of the those who live in reality and give up.....right?

When those who control most of the information flow are completely invested in the fantasy, the crash with reality will be large and consequential.

She’s not far right. Seems like the Italians liked Matteo Salvini, who they conspired to remove from office, and want a return of his policies.

Meloni will set Italy straight.

Difficult? How about impossible?

You see, Senor Doctore, that's because you can't combine them. It's binary, you either have environmental sustainability and emissions reduction, or you have economic growth, but not both.

To be fair, that is because our technology isn't ready for that. Figure out a way to make energy from some source not a fossil fuel that has more power and we'd be with you.

Otherwise possible effect of methane drowned out by that of water vapor.

Effect of 4.3um CO2 band inherently negligible due to small amount of upgoing thermal radiation at that wavelength.

Effect of 14.9um CO2 band mainly already in place (due to itself and effect of water vapor). Therefore, small increases of CO2 will consequently have only a very, very small effect.

I’m not so sure I buy the whole “sustainability” BS.

These dummies want to preserve ice at the poles, but don’t see wood as renewable energy. They’re insane, like people who believe ants are their reincarnated relatives.

Plant trees if you’re so concerned. Let the ice melt, the Sahara will thank you.

These are totalitarians that have found a useful crop of idiots - Elon Musk included (unless he’s so clever that he’s lying to sell electric cars).

The rubber is finally meeting the road. People are seeing up close and personal what Gaia worship is costing them. This will have consequences in upcoming elections.

This is a spiritual shaking. The rebirth of a nation. I expect more and more..earthquakes, volcanoes, strong winds, etc. Watch weather events in the next days and months and it has nothing to do with “climate change”
