Don’t Be Fooled, Putin Still Has Some Nasty Tricks Up His Sleeve
The Daily Beast vai MSN ^ | September 14th, 2022 | Dennis Murphy

Ukraine recaptured the city of Izium on Saturday, giving hope that the tide might finally be turning decisively against the Russian invaders. Not only are Russian forces in retreat, Vladimir Putin is facing increased criticism at home. There is even evidence of the Kremlin engaging in damage control to manage the domestic narrative.

Still, we should not allow ourselves to be carried away by Ukraine’s recent success. Russia still has cards to play.

In the build-up to the escalation in the south around the Ukrainian city of Kherson, Russia redeployed much of its forces to that region. In the process of doing so, it now appears likely that they left their defensive lines around Kharkiv in the northeast thinly defended. By doing so, a window of opportunity for the Ukrainians opened, which they were able to take advantage of last week.

The amount of success the Ukrainians have accomplished is staggering. All those who despise Putin’s aggressive war of choice can take comfort in their recent victories. But it may not be as decisive as some are claiming.

Just as Russia redeployed its troops to the south, it is almost certainly in the process of reorganizing and redeploying its assets to the Donbas. If Russia’s presence in Kharkiv is to collapse completely, then every Russian unit that successfully withdraws from Kharkiv to the east is an additional fighting force that will lend its aid to the defense of Russia’s gains elsewhere.

Russia got spanked in Kharkiv oblast.

There is no rational reason to believe that will continue, as the defensive forces there were deliberately downsized prior to the Ukrainian advance.

But all will believe as they wish about the future.

Well were they spanked or weren't they? This they were badly spanked but didn't suffer because they withdrew early before anything happened is kind of hard to take. Can we just admit that we don't have a clear picture.

Russia mayhe should take a pagee out of NATO’s Serbia playbook and systematically destroy the bridges, power plants, and infrastructure in enemy held territory.

They’d have more luck at that than trying to reconquer Karkiv.

The Ukrainians have had a couple of good days. But the war is not over yet. The Russians have had their confidence shaken but they still hold a lot of territory.

Now, if Ukraine can do it again, it’s a new ball game.

What Ukraine did was throw it’s most capable and well armed troops, that NATO had been preparing for months, into a small area of the front.

The Guardian, Democracy Now, and others reported that a mere 1,000 square kilometers were retaken by Ukraine, not Zel’s claimed 6000 sq km.

The BBC reported that about 1/5 of Ukraine has been conquered by Russia. So Ukrainians retaking 1k to 6k square kilometers of 1/5 of Ukraine turns out to be a paltry percentage (less than 1% to around 5% of what Russia has conquered) and especially paltry given that Russia has made recent advancements into areas of southern Ukraine.

Ukraine took back land the size of Rhode Island (as Russia took more land in the south) and Ukrainian leaders have said publicly they are “worried” if they can even keep it.

English-speaking NATO troops in Kharkiv? To help Ukraine capture an area the size of Delaware? Ukraine too weak and spent to do it on their own? Sad.

The justification for this by neocons, if true, would be “Putin mean, Russia bad” akin to Clinton saying “Slobo mean, Serbia bad” or Obama saying “Gaddafi mean, Libya bad” to justify NATO involvement in those countries, which was against their defensive charter they attacking offensively and especially so since neither Serbia nor Libya attacked a NATO member.

Russia got spanked? Not really. Is Kharkiv part of the Donbass? Nope. What would your chess move have been? I’d gladly give up some pawns for the strategic advantage. Russia will win in the end. The dems and neocons will lose. Anyone wan to bet?

You need to get some better sources. MSDNC and the Daily Beast are both very extreme left wing propaganda sources.

Leftists in our media lie about everything except sport scores and next day weather?

Listening to Leftist media and thinking that is reality about what is happening in Ukraine is 100% idiotic.

Try hearing all sides of a debate for a change.

Kharkov Oblast was a Magnificent Narrative Victory.

Still no word from the Ukies on how their casualty counts went.

Proving once again Rhode Island is only useful for size comparisons. FWIW, Harding County NM is twice it’s size and has a population of 600.

Try hearing all sides of a debate for a change.

Isn't that what MARINER was doing, hearing all sides. One does not have to agree with a very extreme left wing propaganda source just because one wants to know what they are saying.

How else could one attempt to debate any subject?

If you are so interested in debate, the conduct it properly.

All you have done so far is go insult your opponent based on 1 or 2 sentences that Mariner made.

Is that your view of how a debate is conducted ?

I’m not even sure at this point if Russia even knows what they want out of this war anymore. At the start everybody assumed they were going for all of Ukraine, I think we can safely say that’s a non-starter now. Then the theory was they wanted just the Eastern half of Ukraine, even that seems unlikely now as well. So that leaves what? Crimea and the break away regions? Well Russia had Crimea and had effective control of the break away regions before the war even started. So what are they still even fighting for? Declare victory, take your consolation prize and go home.

Parroting certified liars and radical left wing garbage that is in most of the media today is NOT attempting to hear all sides.

The Daily Beast and MSN are extreme leftist web sites that back going to war with people that disagree with their radical globalist/socialist/communist agenda.

They are not real journalists. They are activists, shills and stooges for the DNC.

“”The Guardian, Democracy Now, and others reported that a mere 1,000 square kilometers were retaken by Ukraine, not Zel’s claimed 6000 sq km.””

You really are a troll, even when you get corrected you keep posting lies, and spamming the threads with them.

The Guardian is reporting 8,000 sq km retaken.

“Zelenskiy said about 8,000 sq km (3,100 square miles) have been liberated so far, apparently all in the north-eastern region of Kharkiv. “Stabilisation measures” had been completed in about half of that territory, Zelenskiy said, “and across a liberated area of about the same size, stabilisation measures are still ongoing”. Ukraine now has set its sights on freeing all territory occupied by invading Russian forces.”

The BBC reporting.

“In a late evening address on Tuesday, Mr Zelensky said his forces were fortifying their hold over 8,000 sq km (3,088 sq miles) of retaken territory in the Kharkiv region.

Last Thursday, President Zelensky said Ukrainian forces had retaken 1,000 sq km. By Sunday, that stated figure had tripled to 3,000 sq km, before rising again to 6,000 sq km.”
