At this time, the defense rests," Melisa McNeill declared.
"We're not playing chess," said Broward County (Florida) Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer, visibly annoyed. "This is the most uncalled for, unprofessional way to try the case."
The court had expected 40 more defense witnesses to take the stand when McNeill made the unexpected announcement. Because of the lack of advance warning, prosecutors had not prepared rebuttal witnesses, and the jurors would have to be sent home.
I honestly have never experienced [this] level of unprofessionalism in my career. It's, it's unbelievable," the judge fumed. When McNeill tried to defend herself on the record, Scherer shut her down.
"I don't want to hear it, I don't want hear it," Scherer scolded. "You've been insulting me the entire trial, blatantly taking your headphones off, arguing with me, storming out, coming late intentionally if you don't like my rulings."
The trial will resume Sept. 27 with the state's rebuttal case, which is expected to take about a week.
Cruz pleaded guilty last year to 17 counts of first-degree murder for the Feb. 14, 2018, massacre of students and staff at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

This punk would have ended on a tree a day or two after the shootings 100 years ago.
Now, money bonfire and mocking of the peasants.
They should have a trial in a month and a hanging after appeal in another month…
How much did the trial cost?
Can it, your honor. Every counsel works for his clients. Not for you. And certainly not for the other side.
But it’s not his fault he committed mass murder. His mother drank while carrying him... And he was bullied or something... And all these people say he was great person right up until the day... And... And...

Lawyers and judges love to hear themselves talking about the law.
I was watching the trial when the Defense attorney dropped it on the court that the defense was resting its case.
Keep in mind the defense had told the court they were going to call more than 80 witnesses. The defense had only called about 25 witnesses when they dropped this bombshell.
Needless to say, the Judge was livid and read the Defense Lawyers the riot act.
And by the way, the Taxpayers of Florida are paying this team of at least Defense Lawyers.
And by the way, the Taxpayers of Florida are paying this team of at least SIX Defense Lawyers.
The judge is out of line.
perhaps the defense lawyer wants to move on
to another case
“Can it, your honor. Every counsel works for his clients.”
Pissing off the judge usually doesn’t do much for their clients.
Sometimes you have to.
Maybe he will get 5 executions instead of 3
I suppose. Or sometimes you do it if you have no case and are trying to provoke a mistrial.
Really? It sounds like the judge has exercised the utmost restraint:
"I honestly have never experienced [this] level of unprofessionalism in my career.
Is that what this? Worth a try I suppose.
If the goal was to get this young woman on the bench to flip out, then they seem to have succeeded. If the goal was to reveal the judge as biased for the prosecution, probably not.
Remember. Every judge is just a lawyer with too much power — and all the other judges will put her interests ahead of any defendant appearing before her.
Cat fight!
What’s the point of a “penalty” trial?
He plead guilty, string him up already.
I mean the case is a dog. Aren’t we all just wasting time and money by prolonging this nonsense. There’s no real defense…. All the witnesses in the world aren’t going to save this guy.
Did he get offered a plea deal? Because if so he should have taken it.
