Gun law advocates hail new credit card code as a way to cut down on suspicious sales

Visa, MasterCard and American Express said they will implement a new merchant category code for gun retailers.

The International Organization for Standardization approved the code last week.

The National Rifle Association is criticizing the move and says the code is "a capitulation to anti-gun politicians and activists."

Gun law advocates are praising a decision to adopt a new sales code for transactions at gun stores, a move they had urged to help flag suspicious purchases.

Last week, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), which sets standards for payment transactions, approved the special merchant code for credit and debit card transactions at U.S. gun stores. Then over the weekend, Visa, MasterCard, and American Express said they would begin using the new code.

John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, said the move is a critical first step toward giving banks and credit card companies the tools they need to recognize dangerous firearm purchasing trends − such as a domestic extremist building up an arsenal — and report them to law enforcement.

A merchant category code indicates the types of services or goods sold to consumers. Previously, gun store sales were categorized as "general merchandise".

The attorneys general of New York and California and Massachusetts Sens. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Ed Markey, D-Mass., were among the other notable figures who supported the effort. In New York, dozens of lawmakers had sent letters to the leaders of major credit card companies, urging them to adopt the code.

"When you buy an airline ticket or pay for your groceries, your credit card company has a special code for those retailers. It's just common sense that we have the same policies in place for gun and ammunition stores," New York City Mayor Eric Adams said to the Associated Press over the weekend.

The gun control act of 1968 forbids the federal government from keeping any records regarding firearms ownership, or sale concerning private citizens. Any records of any type.

How many of them will help the Federal Government to violate a Constitutional right?

There ARE hundreds of codes. There was NOT this one. I would think that was for a reason.

Garbage!

FBI and other law enforcement agencies have had more that sufficient warning of the threat posed by recent "Mass Shooters", and did nothing.

This is simply another cog in the effort to track and control law abiding citizens who might not stand still as the Constitution is gutted.

Yeah, rest easy that that law is being observed!

Businesses doing what the Constitution prohibits the Government from doing. Isn’t there a name for this?

And the Nazicrats claim that if they lose in the elections, it’s a defeat for democracy. I don’t recall getting to vote on this. What’s next, monitoring your red meat consumption and cutting you off when you’ve bought ‘too much’?

I think it’s a little less nefarious than what it’s being made to be. There’s already hundreds of merchant codes breaking everything you charge down into all kinds of categories.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I think it’s nefarious as all get out. When will the government be asking for all the hearing aid purchases? All the Florist purchases? Never. But they WILL be asking for lists of gun/ammo purchases & it will likely be on a weekly/monthly basis, not just when there’s a “suspicious” or mass shooting .... what a load of BS. They are building a gun registry ... they are very afraid of an armed populace.

BTW, I am cash only, no CC. After seeing that list of codes, if I had a card, I’d be getting rid of it.

Since this outrage is being posted again I will post my detailed response again.
You may want to copy this for reference.

Every FFL sale is already recorded in two ways, one temporary and one permanent.
The “Brady Check” is supposed to be temporary and the record of it at the NICS level destroyed after ninety days.
The form 4473 “Brady Check” has to be retained by the FFL dealer for twenty years.
All Bound Book entries are permanent until end of business, at which time ALL of those records are sent to ATF.
Despite specific prohibitions on creating a central firearms registry ATF is busy doing exactly that via OCR digitizing of all Bound Books in their possession.
This gets even easier for them when dealers respond to the harassment of frequent “Forward trace request” by going to digital records.
ATF claim their registry activity is legal as it is not searchable.
Of course it is only a couple of keystrokes to make that database searchable and shared.

So this CC coding is just one more straw on the Camels back.
But it is also the one that is most easily avoided.
Pay cash as many have said.
Or use Discover card. I have personally confirmed that Discover is not a party to this sedition.
There are probably other smaller credit card companies who are not jumping aboard as well.
If a significant number of us would cancel the sedition cards and switch to Discover or other companies not a part of this feculence it would be noticed, and could get the tracking rescinded.
CC companies are still more loyal to profit than Woke/PC garbage.

Yeah because criminals and gang-bangers totally go to a store, pass a background check, and use a credit card for their purchases. State legislatures need to act and forbid this in their states.

It is a gun registry that will be held by CC companies; washing the Government’s dirty hands of constitutionality until they “produce a subpoena”.

Sure sounds like the makings of a gun registry to me... which I believe violates the 2nd Amendment!
