Great historical share. We need more like him
Thanks. Know of Sobieski and Martel, but had never heard of this fellow.
We need John Galt & the Crusaders all at the same time.
Too bad so many “men” are woke or effeminate sissies these days.
Yep, Skanderbeg is a big deal in Albanian history. Even the Communists held him up as an example.
Sobieski,a great 👍 Polish hero.
I learned something new today.
Coincidently this morning the Shepherd’s Chapel was covering part of Judges, specifically the part where Gideon takes his force of 300 into the huge camp of the Midianites and sends them running in confusion into the night.
And today Albania is almost 2/3 Muslim.
The Siege of Vienna would make an epic movie, Winged Hussars charging in at the last minute & massacring the invading Mohammedans etc.
I doubt Hollywood would make the movie I’d want to see.
It would make a great movie.
Enver Hoxha declared that Albania was the first officially atheist state in the world.
That is somewhat true but somewhat misleading. During the rule of Enver Xoxha, Albania was an officially atheist state, and religious practices were forbidden. After the fall of Xoxha, with a generation or more of religion being outlawed, Albanians were religious by heritage but not by actual practice. Christianity is currently making inroads in Albania.
Another tidbit: A few years ago, Albania was rated the most pro-American country on Earth.
I have been to Albania and have seen the statue of Skanderbeg on horseback in the town square.
How many bunkers did you see there?
Several. They are still around, relics of Xoxha’s paranoia and power.
I have always been fascinated with Albania, but I haven’t had the chance to go there.
I went during the Kosovo Crisis. It was very interesting and eye opening.
I’ll leave a tidbit here: Cultures are different. For example, our standard of lining up politely and everyone taking their turn, which we unconsciously accept as the norm, is not the standard in many countries of the world. Instead of a line, you may have a crowd, and whoever pushes their way to the front is the first one served.
One special thing about the Albanian people, though, is their emphasis on hospitality. This is an integral part of their culture. For example, our family was invited to eat at the apartment of a couple of young ladies. They considered it an honor to have us and feed us. However, we noticed that they did not eat. We invited them repeatedly to join in. They politely refused. We realized later that they did not take part, because they had given us everything that they had, and there was none left for them.
Do they still have that “Code of Lek” thing?
