Didn’t NATO break the “peace streak” by bombing the hell out of Yugoslavia?
That's why I said "major war". We have two nations with a combined population of nearly 200 million slugging it out now.
Take your Yugoslavia story and shove it. The Serbians were the racist neonazis in that war and I don’t care if they had been choir boys.
It has ZERO to do with the Russian attack on the Ukraine and the strategic issues involved for the United States and the world.
You want to compare an ass pimple (Serbia) with cancer (Putin) and I’m not playing.
This is 2022 we don’t have a time machine to debate unrelated long ago events and beat ourselves up over it.
Focus.
Yugoslavia was the creation of Tito, a strongman who united various small groups, many of which hated each other, into something called a country. Afghanistan is similarly composed of tribal groups with independent strong men which often are in conflict with one another. Once the USSR broke up, and Tito was gone, these Yugo internal conflicts burst out and the various groups wanted their own countries. Heavy fighting occurred among them and also episodes of ethnic cleansing against Muslims living there. There was no “peace streak” for NATO to break.
Here is a summary statement at the top of a Google page when I asked for links on “reasons for the breakup of Yugoslavia.” I saw no mention of NATO in titles of various links offered.
“The varied reasons for the country’s breakup ranged from the cultural and religious divisions between the ethnic groups making up the nation, to the memories of WWII atrocities committed by all sides, to centrifugal nationalist forces.”
