So..it will take a couple days. Meanwhile, if you take a look at the map of the area. The forces in that area are from the break away regions and have withdrawn over that river to set up defensive lines.

If Ukraine does not bolster its flanks, those forces will get chewed to hell.

I am waiting to see if the Russians start a scorched earth campaign there.

Your point about the 5 brigades is valid, but I'd point out that Ukrainian intelligence (obviously bolstered by U.S./Western satellites and SIGINT) likely has a very good sense of the forces the Russians have that are available and able to respond. I'd be very surprised if they were caught off guard and over exposed by a Russian counter attack. It's more likely that when they detect the presence of Russian forces able to counter attack, they'll simply pull back to defensible positions.

I also don't think this counteroffensive was something they just came up with on the fly after the Kherson counteroffensive did not generate the expected gains. It just takes too long to concentrate those forces, prepare the logistical support, etc. In other words this, had to be pre-planned before the Kherson counteroffensive began. Which means all the chatter about the Kherson counteroffensive was a faint for this attack.

I would expect the Ukrainians to resume the reduction of the Kherson salient at some point simply because the geography favors them. But this was really a brilliant counter-stroke that likely will make the Russians much more hesitant to reinforce other sectors in the future.

The Kherson attack was telegraphed publicly in the media for literally weeks. This attack in Kharkiv Oblast came out of absolutely nowhere. The contrast is so stark that I cannot imagine it wasn’t deliberate
