There’s custom checks between the US & Canada and no one seems very upset about it.
For three decades goods, including raw food, passed freely between Ireland, Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK without a tizzy.

With the price of petrol, few people will drive 20 to 40 kilometers to save a few pounds buying smuggled goods.
