Arizona GOP gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake wants to eliminate state income tax

PHOENIX — Republican gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake wants Arizona to join nine other states in not having an income tax — if she can make it work.

“I want to eventually get rid of the income tax if we can do that,” Lake told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s The Mike Broomhead Show on Thursday. “I haven’t made that promise because I don’t want to make a promise that I can’t keep.

“But I want to get it down to as close to zero as possible so we can compete with some of these other states.”

Lake didn’t detail how she’d make it a reality, but her income tax stance is in line with her belief that taxes should be lowered as much as possible in Arizona.

The former TV news anchor says she wants the state to be a great place for businesses, especially for ones struggling coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic and with inflation.

Lake wants to also lower sales and property taxes.

“We need to make sure we do everything we can to make sure our businesses are able to weather that storm,” Lake said.

Lake’s opponent, Democrat Katie Hobbs, said Wednesday as a forum in Phoenix that raising taxes was “not on the table” and that she was for “for lowering taxes every place that we can.”

For Lake, not raising taxes isn’t good enough.

“With Katie Hobbs, you’re going to get somebody who will raise taxes despite what she said last night because she’s never met a tax increase she doesn’t love,” Lake said.

Removing a state income tax is the surest way to bring more people to your state and improve the economy. Texas works off a sales tax and property taxes.

Has any state that has instituted an income tax ever dismantled it? Somehow, I kinda doubt it.

Alaska did away with its state income tax in 1980. We also never had a state sales tax.

No income tax in TN.

When we moved here, taxes were paid on investment income, but that was phased out so is no more.

We did in TN - the tax on investment income. Now no income tax at all.

Abolishing the income tax is one of three good tax strategies. The other two:

1) As in Florida, your primary residence cannot be taken away in bankruptcy.

2) In states with low or declining population, create “homestead acts”, where if you buy a minimum/maximum plot area and residence and provide your own utilities, and live there for a minimum of 6 months and a day (Alaska standard), no subletting or leasing/renting permitted, all your local and state taxes will be waived. And your property can be inherited without taxes.

Awesome. We have communists in Texas pushing for an income tax every couple of years.

With her musings about eliminating the state income tax, Lake has “touched the monkey”.

And that is the main reason why Texas is becoming California.

A good start would be a flat tax.
Right now it’s quite progressive.

If that happens, property tax skyrockets unless spending is cut.
