Whule an undergraduate in Syracuse U., I was also engaged in the Service Battery, 249th Armored Field Artillery, 28th Armored Dev., NYARNG; which was based nearby in the East Genessee St. Armory.
There were still a lot of WWII and Korean War vets in the battalion as officers and upper grade NCOs. I was able as a teenager to satisfy their demands of a new soldier, such that they wound up sending me to NCO school while yet a PFC.
I was very grateful to have the years of experience as a National Guardsman under combat veterans. I'm sure that they are all dead now, gone on to Glory, but still remembered and honored.
