Ed Sec: Recruiting outsiders to teach a ‘slap in the face’ to educators
Washington Examiner ^ | September 7,2022 | Paul Bedard

In addressing how governors such as Florida’s Ron DeSantis are handling state teacher shortages, Cardona said that it is as important to treat current educators with “respect” as filling vacancies.

At a breakfast roundtable hosted by the Christian Science Monitor, Cardona suggested that school systems first address why teachers are leaving and why it is hard to recruit new teachers. A former teacher himself, he said the focus should be on improving pay and working conditions.

He recalled that while working in Connecticut, the state had a program called “Troops to Teachers,” and it was great to get their “skill set.” But those programs also represent lowering teaching standards to fill slots, something that he said shouldn’t be done.

He called instead for improving conditions, putting students on a “pathway” to becoming teachers, rehiring retired teachers.

Cardona said his department is working with Treasury to change tax laws to make returning to teaching by retirees attractive.

“There are solutions out there. Lower standards is not one of them. We need to raise the bar,” he told reporters.

And given their work product, a good slap in the face is just what the doctor ordered. :)

We have several “imported teachers” from Jamaica in our school. They’ve done very well so far.

My wife was a first ...Second teacher.....

She said most of the teachers just gave the kids paper work...

Her classroom was fun for kids and they learned reading and math...

She taught a lot of math with money....the kids all had bank accounts

Even used watermelons to teach math...

She even had second graders helping first graders

Educators?

Facilitators maybe.

Educator’s teach people how to think.
Facilitators teach people what to think.

Cardona suggested that school systems first address why teachers are leaving and why it is hard to recruit new teachers.

You can start by asking the teachers who are leaving, like my wife.

The kids are out of control, disrespectful, and the parents don't provide any backup support for student discipline.

That is raising the standard. Retired military is far better in that classroom than someone who went to teachers college. FAR better... they will command respect, and are generally better educated and intelligent. The NEA and DOE are terrified that they will quickly turn out students who test well. Scores shooting up would be a nightmare for them.

Yep.. and a military guy will be able to provide that structure and won’t accept kids running over him. But of course, we both know the bureaucracy will get to work at grinding them down.
They can handle the kids, but the educational administrative hierarchy is another question.

Any self-respecting military officer’s career survived only because he figured out how to take down foot-dragging self-serving bureaucrats.

Considering what’s been produced, a ‘slap’ is getting off light

The only thing they will raise is their salaries as a payoff for their loyal voting block.

Exactly.

The Obama administration, Under Eric Holder, used higher suspension rates for minorities to imply systemic racism. They tied funding to having lower suspension rates for minorities. They made it impossible to discipline students, opting for “restorative justice”. Restorative justice translates to “Peace Circles” and other grossly ineffective practices. The students began to quickly realize that they could do anything and get away with it. The schools and classrooms were no longer controlled.

Then administrators began forcing teachers to not fail minorities. Kids that showed up occasionally, and did no work could not be failed which they deserved.

Administration does not support teachers. If a parent comes in to complain that you spoke harshly to LaSh’mandra, they the teacher is at fault, not the obnoxious, rude and verbally aggressive behavior that LaSh’mandra displayed in class.

Teachers spend 50% of class time or more dealing with gross disrespect.

And then they wonder why 3 of 5 new teachers leave the field in less than 5 years and why older experienced teachers are leaving.

They need more than a slap in the face. How about putting them on trial for crimes against humanity?
