Cleotha might not be the brightest bulb on the tree, but if he suspected that Mrs Fletcher’s family had lots of money, why would he kill her? His other kidnapping was based on getting money out of the victim.

He may well have targeted her since she apparently jogged/ran the same route at oh-dark-thirty every morning. Or he may have just seen a white woman running by apparently without a care in the world and decided to have his way with her.

In any case, after a fair trial, I hope Cleotha faces the prospect of dying in prison—either from old-age/deadly attack by another prisoner or less likely by whatever method of execution Tennessee uses.
