The California Independent System Operator on Wednesday afternoon (at 12:12 PM PDT) issued an Energy Emergency Alert 1, in effect from 4 to 9 pm.
The alert by the manager of the state's power grid is a warning to utilities that all electricity resources are expected to be fully committed and some shortages are possible.
Residents are already being urged to cut their power use during those hours due to a previously declared Flex Alert, but Cal ISO is again calling on people to step up their conservation efforts further to avoid rolling blackouts.
With electricity demand reaching record levels due to a drawn-out heat wave, Southern California and the whole state avoided rolling power blackouts as the manager of the power grid called for maximum conservation efforts by residents.
On Tuesday morning, Cal ISO declared an Energy Emergency Alert 1 for the same hours, warning utilities that all electricity resources are expected to be fully committed and some shortages are possible. By early afternoon, Cal ISO moved to Energy Emergency Alert 2, requesting all available emergency supplies to be made available to meet the demand. And just before 6 p.m., the state moved into Energy Emergency Alert 3, calling for maximum conservation efforts while warning that blackouts could be imminent absent reduced demand.
"As the state faces the hottest day in this prolonged, record-breaking heat wave, grid conditions are expected to worsen," according to the power-grid manager. "If needed, ISO could order utilities to begin rotating power outages to maintain stability of the electric grid."
If energy reserves are exhausted, the ISO would instruct utilities in its service area to manage rolling blackouts. Utilities make the determination of how best to rotate the outages across their service territory, with the goal of keeping them as short as possible.

I just got back from two doctors' appointments in Mountain View and Palo Alto and this place still feels like a COVID ghost town. The vitality and energy of Silicon Valley are missing. The Midtown area of Palo Alto still has LOTS of defunct businesses on California Ave. Old favorite restaurants are gone. Amazingly, there are still some large construction projects underway. There are very few people on the sidewalks and few eating at the restaurants.
The maskaholics are still out in force here. The good news is I refused to wear a mask at either doctors' office and didn't get nagged. The young lady at teh front desk asked "Sir, do you have a mask?" I answered "Yes." She replied "Would you mind putting it on?" I said "Yes, I do mind." Then she gave up.
Welcome back to Third-World Crapholistan.
Don’t charge your electric cars! Turn up your AC.
Even if everyone in California bought an EV it still wouldn’t save the place from the Democrats
Emperor Tiresome commands his subjects to bend over
I’m so old I remember a time when election decisions didn’t involve a choice of who you thought was best at keeping the lights working.
I think the 4chan push to have people turn more things on is actually working.
The young lady at teh front desk asked “Sir, do you have a mask?” I answered “Yes.” She replied “Would you mind putting it on?” I said “Yes, I do mind.”
zi was at a new doctor’s office recently, and a few weeks before, no mask needed. But not today.
When they offered me a mask, I said ‘Thanks but I’m not superstitious...’ it went down from there.
Flex Alert ?
Is this something Schwarzenegger came up with ?
The EU president actually used the words “flatten the curve” when it came to energy costs in Europe.
EVs are only a means for the wealthy to subjugate the rest of us.
My AC is running full-tilt. I set the thermostat to a comfortable 72F. Screw all of those Sacramento bastards and all the utility execs who quickly rolled over for the enviro-weenies. Nobody put up a fuss when those idiots decided to ruin our power system.
LOL. I'll have to remember that!
I’m so old I remember working for a power industry that met the needs of the people. We provided reliable, low-cost power that was always on. We had what used to be called an “obligation to serve.” You were licensed as a “natural monopoly” business and in exchange you had to provide plentiful, abundant, and cheap power to everybody.
Those were the days, my friend.
“Flex Alert” — dreamed up by a “20-something” marketing whiz to make you feel good about living in Crapistan.
Wow, that’s pathetic. I’m surprised he didn’t say “Out of an abundance of caution, we are cutting off your energy supply.”
these dumb ass flex alerts have been going on for over 20 yrs now.. its currently 107 at my house in bakersfield going to 112 by 5 pm.. yes my AC is running set at 80
Go to Amazon and get your 5 gallon bucket of electric for backup. Pick up and install a couple of extra electrical outlets for addition electric at home.
But is it a dry heat? That will make you feel better.
If I lived there, I’d blast my AC and everything else electric, to try to help induce some more blackouts - as that seems to be the only way to knock any sense into at least some of the people there.
I’m thinking that a complete collapse of the entire CA grid followed by a three-week “black start” of the system MIGHT do that. But I’m not sure. Imagine how much of a field day the criminals would have during that period of time.
Electricity is probably the most taken-for-granted product people buy. It’s always there when you flip the switch. People need to be reminded just how fragile our society is from time-to-time and vote accordingly.
