Troubled relations between regional rivals Turkey and Greece worsened Tuesday, with Turkey's president doubling down on a thinly veiled invasion threat and Athens responding that it's ready to defend its sovereignty.
Turkey and Greece have decades-old disputes over an array of issues, including territorial claims in the Aegean Sea and disagreements over the airspace there. The friction between the neighbors has brought the NATO allies to the brink of war three times in the last half-century.

I was working a contract with a company as a subcontractor and one contract specialist was of Greek and French extraction and was fluent in both Greek and French, had a degree in international business, somebody mentioned something in the news and this woman went from Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde when the Turks were brought up. I was quite taken aback I had absolutely no idea of that animosity.

The conflict with Greece and Turkey is old and deep. Erdoo is a terrible “ruler”. But the Ottomans before him were worse.
The Kemalists in prior times would have dealt with Erdoo, but no longer. (one is not much better than the other)

Ankara and Athens are at odds over the Aegean and Mediterranean where they are in dispute over overlapping sovereign areas in the air and on the sea.
Ankara has been complaining of provocative actions by Athens in recent months, saying such moves undermine peace efforts.
Türkiye says Greece is stationing troops on islands in the Aegean Sea in violation of peace treaties signed after World Wars I and II.
The Turkish Defense Ministry said the Greek warplanes scrambled to harass the Turkish F-16s on Aug. 22 and 24 by locking their radars on to them. The incidents took place while the Turkish jets were escorting the American warplanes and other allied airplanes on these dates, the ministry cited.
On Aug. 23, the Crete-based S-300 air defense system of Greece locked on to the Turkish F-16s, the ministry announced, calling the move “hostile” and inconsistent with the spirit of the NATO alliance.
