You can make a form of biodegradable plastic from soybeans. It won't be long until the greenies start advocating that.

Anyone else old enough to remember a brief era in the mid-1970s when plastic packing peanuts were being phased out in favor of popcorn?

I kid you not. Things were shipped packed in popcorn. That fad lasted just a few months until warehouses discovered that the change attracted rodents big time.

Henry Ford was experimenting with soy based plastics back in the 1930’s.
They couldn’t get around the brittleness issues. Modern auto wiring insulation is soy based. And that’s a huge problem because mice and rats have discovered that it is absolutely delicious.
