Yes,and I absolutely agree with your assessment of Shirer’s work.
However, many of his criticisms of “the German national psyche” (or what he perceives as such) had been levied by other writers, especially this idea of “subservience to authority” which he traces back to Martin Luther. Yes, he once preached about this idea, but it was about Romans 13:1 or 1. Peter 2:13.
So the esteemed Mr. Shirer, and all those who came before, might have laid the blame at the feet of the Apostles Paul and Peter :-D
Furthermore, when the War came, of course nearly everybody set aside his personal quibbles and helped with the war effort.
That’s what normally happens in a war - especially so when criticism of any kind, even the mildest, is not allowed.
Even my family had, so to say, first-hand experience with this: a great-uncle of mine discovered to his sorrow what it meant to speak ill of Him Who Must Not be Named...
