Republican Matt Mowers holds a narrow lead in the primary race in New Hampshire’s battleground First District, according to a recent poll.

The poll, conducted by the University of New Hampshire Survey Center from August 25 to 29, found Mowers with a two-point edge over his closest competitor, Karoline Leavitt. Mowers received 26 percent, Leavitt received 24 percent, and Gail Huff Brown received 16 percent.

Mowers or Leavitt would be preferable over Brown's wife. No more aristocratic families.

The Browns were from our little town. Absolutely nothing aristocratic about them. Went to a bbq at their home when he was running. Incredibly nice family. Normal, Americana. Too nice, or they would have won more. The only complaint I’d have is that he was none too bright. But how many politicians are? I’d rather have one on the Republican side than on the Democratic, regardless of smarts.

Karoline Leavitt is proud of her service in the Trump White House. She’s got my vote.

Mowers is a longtime Chris Christie operative. He apparently went to Rutgers and has zero experience outside politics.

But yes, he’d be better than Brown’s wife, no doubt.

I take it you approve of the RINO wing of the GOP.

She’s pretty young and heavy on generational politics, but seems to be the best of the bunch.

“The Browns were from our little town. Absolutely nothing aristocratic about them.”

Running the wife of a politician or government official is aristocratic. It’s quite possible she thinks she’d be a good representative of the people, but since Scott Brown is her husband, she wouldn’t. She’d be a RINO.

But aside from that, the parties just LOVE running relatives for office (and this is nothing new, it’s VERY common in history, but needs to be avoided).

Some examples of Establishment thinking:

Let’s run Bill Clinton’s wife

Let’s run George Romney’s son

Let’s run Congressman D’Alesandro’s daughter (Nancy Pelosi)

Let’s run Dick Cheney’s daughter

Let’s pick Frank Murkowski’s daughter

Let’s run Mel Carnahan’s wife

Let’s run Hubert Humphrey’s wife

Let’s run Hubert Humphrey’s son

Let’s run John Sununu’s son

Let’s run John Sununu’s other son

Let’s run Mario Cuomo’s son

Let’s run yet another Taft

Let’s run yet another Bush

Let’s run Admiral McCain’s son

Let’s run another Daley

And on. And on.

As I said, it’s quite common in History (we’ve had the Lee’s , the Adams’s, the Roosevelts, the Saltonstalls, the Harrisons, etc.) but should be avoided.

I would vote for her too, but I’m one state south of you, haha.

I disagree with you completely. Every political family knows the issues the politician is dealing with. It’s common conversation. And they know the assistants who do much of the work for the politician. Frequently they share the political point of view. All of this means that a family member can be better suited to take over an office that the politician served in as they can get up to speed quickly.

My father-in-law served in the IL house. Even not living nearby, we were constantly updated on his positions and always interacted with his assistants when we visited. There was no one in my husband’s family who would have had any quality to serve after him. But many in political families, especially ones of some size, DO have the qualities.

So I’m against a particular candidate serving when I have particular reasons, but never just because they are related.

I approve of good people. The Browns are the highest quality of good people. If all I’ve got to choose from are RINO’s, yes, I will vote for a RINO. I’m careful with MAGA candidates because, while I worship the ground Trump trods on, I don’t like extremism from either direction. I’ve seen so called MAGA candidates that made me not vote for a particular office. I love Trump’s politics with a soupcon of rationality. RINOs, also, can be extreme. Anyone who voted against Trump is, to me, an extremist and never to be voted for. Someone of Romney’s ilk is as extremist as the worst of the MAGA politicians.

“I hope Leavitt takes it”

The NH GOP (this is probably true elsewhere) is an unhappy marriage of MAGA, GOPe, and New England liberals who don’t like people who shower AFTER work.

It has always been expected that MAGAs will vote for GOPe before they vote for a Democrat. However, GOPe and NE liberals will ALWAYS vote for a Democrat before a MAGA.

This makes nominating MAGA candidates problematic. It’s good that they are winning primaries. But it’s bad that, running as the official Republican candidate, the GOPe voters will usually vote for, and elect, the Democrat.

What’s missing here is MAGA systematically raiding the Democrat voter base to add the voters who get dirty at work but who love their country. Those are the people in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania who made Trump President.

BUT (and it’s a big but) - those are also the people who HATE with incandescent flame the GOPe. When you have a “normal” GOP candidate - “cut taxes, people should be free to do their own thing, get rid of unions, etc” - then, MAGA stands alone because patriotic white working Democrats WILL NOT VOTE for the GOP brand in most cases.
