We are headed into uncharted territory for America, as even during the dark days of 1861-1865 there was still some civility between the opposing sides, some sense of honor. But this...this has never happened before in the United States, where the US president came out publicly and demonized and vilified and wrote off half the country as some kind of untermenschen.
