In an open election like this, it is suicide to run more than one candidate from your own party.
Begich never should have run in the first place. All he did was to split the Republican vote.

The Begich family in Alaska have been Democrats for generations. Nick Begich went in as a Republican to purposefully drain votes from Palin. Mission accomplished.
