Shelling halts UN inspection of Ukraine nuclear plant and prompts emergency shutdown of reactor

The International Atomic Energy Agency’s mission is set to inspect the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant today, but there are reports of intense shelling around Enerhodar, where the plant is located.

IAEA chief Rafael Grossi said the mission was aware of “increased military activity in the area” but was pressing ahead with its plan to visit the facility and meet personnel there, Reuters reported.…

… Russia’s Ministry of Defense, meanwhile, counteraccused Ukraine of shelling Enerhodar this morning, and claimed that Ukrainian forces tried to “seize” the nuclear power plant.

″“Today, at about 06:00 Moscow time, Ukrainian troops in two sabotage groups of up to 60 people in seven boats landed on the coast of the Kakhovka reservoir, three kilometers northeast of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, and attempted to seize the power plant,” the ministry said.

The enemy was destroyed, “including with the use of army aviation,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement reported by Russian news agency Interfax.

The report went on to say that Enerhodar “was subjected to a massive artillery strike from the Armed Forces of Ukraine” this morning in which an apartment building and a kindergarten were hit (the same targets Ukraine said Russia had hit). CNBC was unable to immediately verify any of the reports.

For its part, the head of the IAEA’s visit to the nuclear power plant has said the mission will continue despite the reports of heightened military activity nearby.

Well, this certainly makes things interesting in Ukraine today.

Since Russia is in control of that plant, will the fake news in America ask why Ukraine is shelling a nuclear power facility? Or is Ukraine still above criticism?

One way to potentially get the Russians to pull back and leave occupied areas of Ukraine is to go ahead and let the reactors to meltdown, spilling radiation all over the place, it would not only make the Russians pull back, but it would prevent any future occupation in the future.

No, fake news MSM will insist Russia is attacking themselves.

Ukraine isn’t opposed to inspection of the reactors. They have no reason to be.

What makes you think Ukraine is doing the shelling?

And what makes you think that the Ukrainians are the ones doing the shelling? Because the Russians told you so?

Anyone with HALF A BRAIN, who is not on the USG’s payroll, knows that Ukraine cannot allow the inspectors to visit the nuclear plant.

Photos, or it didn’t happen.

That should be the standard response to any Russian story.

SIGH
Obviously you are still recovering.
The article does not say the plant was being shelled.

The area around the plant is what I read.
A better question would be; why are russians around and in a plant that is in a neighboring country??

Actually, it does now seem that way.

A witness recorded ON VIDEO the moments that two rockets hit Enerhodar (not the NPP complex, but the residential / shopping area to its east). You can see the direction the first one came from. And, when the dust clears, the crater is a bit of a giveaway.

The thread analyses the direction they came from and concludes they could only have been fired from the eastern side... inside the Russian controlled territory on the south bank of the river. here.

Anyone with even half of a half a brain will have noticed that it’s the Russians who keep obfuscating the inspection.

Not the Ukrainians.

First of all they kept arguing about the date. Then they grudgingly agreed to a week of grace to get all the incriminating evidence out of the way. Then they held up the inspectors 60km away from the plant on the very spurious basis that it was for their own safety. Then they decided to slow-walk the inspectors through the checkpoints instead of giving them a VIP guided pass.

Then, they decided 3 days would be way too long, and reduced the inspection time to about the time you’d expect to spend if you were touring the plant on a school trip.

And finally, just for fun, they threw out completely unsubstantiated claims that a wave of Ukes were sunk in the Dnipro while attempting to recapture the plant without firing off a shot...

While Russia got caught red handed firing two rockets into Enerhodar.

Bob, if I put on a hammer and sickle hat, can I sell you the Brooklyn Bridge? I’ve actually got excess stock, so they’re on a buy 2, get 1 free special.

Sorry, but it still makes NO SENSE for the inspectors to go through Kiev since Russia controls the land on which the nuke is located.

So go bitch at them.

Weak, man. Just weak.

If Russia was THAT committed to expediting the inspection, they could’ve left the inspection at three full days, laid on accommodation, and even guaranteed safe uninterrupted passage of a helicopter to take them into the region.

Putin authorised the inspection on the 19th of August, after a formal request on the 4th. It’s been two weeks since Putin OK’d it.

The Russians on the ground were still throwing up excuses yesterday, trying to delay it. Russian state TV even threw in the absurd suggestion that the 14 inspectors from the UN might use the opportunity to lay mines inside the buildings.

Russia could’ve cut Ukraine out of the loop completely, if Ukraine was the agency putting roadblocks in the way. They could very easily have expedited a chopper - they’ve got plenty flying around the south of the Dniper, firing small rockets into Enerhodar.

So how about you go bitch at THEM.

Or, better yet, ask the UN team why they went from Kyiv if it had been that much easier to travel entirely through Russian held territory.

Aha.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Rafael Grossi, said to France 24 on August 25th...

“Moscow has insisted the inspectors travel to the plant via Russian-controlled territory.”

Simple question: if Russia wants that inspection to clear its name WHY IS IT MAKING BATSHIT DEMANDS LIKE THAT?

Since the whole city around the plant is under Russian control, any inbound chopper or road convoy can easily be diverted to some zone outside of the plant boundary, and thoroughly checked for weapons etc. I’m sure Turkey would’ve been quite happy to lay on a chopper.

If Ukraine really was the bad actor in all of this, the simplest and easiest way to prove them the guilty party would’ve been to expedite a trip from Ukraine, end to end, and film the whole thing.

Funny how Russia had a golden opportunity to prove good faith but chose instead to don the trenchcoats, act like complete spivs, lie through their teeth about a nonexistent invasion party crossing the river, and sending an attack chopper up to fire rockets into Energodar DURING the inspection.
