When my mother and sister visited China in the eighties, they said they never saw a bird or an animal on the streets. The tourists were appalled to see beagle puppies in the zoo behind several layers of fences. The guide told them, the fences were to protect the animals. Without the fences the dogs would be on a dinner table within days.

A guy from South Africa who spent over ten years in China commented on his YouTube channel that when he went traveling through China he saw less wildlife in the rural parts than he would see in typical urban areas in other countries.

Maybe the famine caused by the Cultural Revolution had something to do witg that.
