what the heck does ‘neocon’ mean anyway?
Originally it meant “neoconservative”, as opposed to the “paleoconservatives” types like Pat Buchanan and the John Birch Society, or I guess just plain old middle of the road conservatives. They were founded by a group of New York Trotskyite communists led by Bill Kristol’s dad, Irving Kristol, founder of National Review. They supposedly “saw the light” and switched from being communists to fight against the left, but many people see them as just trying to use a different strategy to enact leftist policies, by play acting as conservatives to control the opposition.
