Not everyone lives near the schwarzwald. 🤪👍 The whole time I lived in Germany, I never once saw a wood burning stove. Doesn’t mean there aren’t any. I just never saw any. 😆😀🧐

Every winter I do some experimenting to look for easy-to-grow firewood alternatives, mostly from annual crops. So far, corn cobs and sunflower disks keep coming out on top. Most crop wastes, such as bean vines or sunflower shells, just smoulder, even when compressed into blocks.

The stuff that just smoulders I use to make biochar, which is very useful in the garden. I suppose the char could be compressed to make something like briquettes and used for fuel, but that means extra processing steps.
