Ukraine live briefing: Zaporizhzhia residents line up for iodine, fearing nuclear leak; third American killed

Fears continued to mount over the possibility of a nuclear accident at the embattled Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant on Sunday. Meanwhile, the United States has confirmed the death of a third U.S. citizen in Ukraine. Here’s the latest on the war and its impact across the globe.

1. Key developments Local authorities in Zaporizhzhia are distributing potassium iodide tablets in the event of a radioactive leak, and residents are lining up. The tablets help counteract the effects of radioactive exposure by blocking the body’s absorption of the radioactive form of iodine.

Over the weekend, Russia and Ukraine accused each other of shelling near the plant, which Ukraine’s state-run energy agency warned could cause a hydrogen leak and “sputtering of radioactive substances.”

A delegation of experts from the U.N. nuclear watchdog is expected to arrive at the site this week. Russian forces have occupied the plant since March. The State Department confirmed that another U.S. citizen has died but did not identify the person. The agency has confirmed the deaths of three U.S. citizens so far, though other fatalities have been reported. Oleg Kozhemyako, the governor of Russia’s Primorsky Krai region, said Friday that troops had killed an American in battle.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered payments and welfare benefits be made to Ukrainians arriving in Russia, according to a law signed this weekend. Earlier this year, others leaving Ukraine, including from the Russian-occupied areas of Donetsk and Luhansk, were given Russian passports and payments of 10,000 rubles ($170).

2. Battlefield updates
Russia’s military expansion is likely to have little impact on the Ukraine war, Britain’s Defense Ministry said. The expansion announced Thursday was set to increase Russia’s military from 1.9 million personnel to 2.04 million, coming into effect in 2023, but Britain said the expansion was “unlikely” to substantively increase Russia’s combat power, because it had already “lost tens of thousands of troops.” The ministry added that “very few” new contract servicemen are being recruited, and conscripts do not have to serve outside Russia.

The Dnipropetrovsk region was shelled with heavy artillery overnight Sunday, according to the regional governor, Valentyn Reznichenko. The area includes Nikopol, across the river from the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant. More than 1,500 families were left without electricity; residential buildings and cars were damaged, he said, but no casualties were reported. The Washington Post could not independently verify the claims.

3. Human toll
The story of little Liza, killed in her stroller by a Russian missile. Headlines about the 4-year-old girl who was killed by a Russian strike in Vinnytsia in July reverberated around the world. Her mother Iryna Dmytrieva, in her first interview since leaving the hospital for her own injuries, says she keeps replaying those final moments with Liza.

Russians using the nuke plant as a form of “human shield” to protect their equipment.

The Nuke plant is doing more to protect their junk than their SAMS ...Pathetic really.

The old Soviet Union was in Afghanistan for 9 years before they left. We were there 20 years. WHY, does anyone expect Ukraine to be a quickly settled “war”??

Less than 9yrs, yes very likely. How much less, who knows. This is a simple siege and battle of attrition. They are notoriously slow.

Russian forces have occupied the plant since March.

Is that accurate?

If so, its only been since the United States supplied HIMAR artillery to Ukraine that the plant has come under attack.

Are the puppet nazis in Kiev still denying they're the ones responsible?

I wonder what happened to her 12 year old daughter who was with her or with the two other people who were with her when she traveled from Estonia to Austria.

Locals recognized her and in a hotel in Austria and the rest is history.

“The Nuke plant is doing more to protect their junk than their SAMS ...Pathetic really.”

From a couple different videos taken at different locations by workers within the ZNPP facility, I counted dozens of orc-RUbe military vehicles (including probable canvass covered rocket launchers, armor and support vehicles) crammed into wherever the ork-RUbes could put them.

For anyone with an IQ above a rock, this was clearly a long term ork-RUbe planned nuclear crisis scenario from the beginning. Of course Putins cathiter’s and bobblehead’s are cheering on death and destruction of anyone who would defend themselves against Putins attack’s on UA...🇺🇸🇺🇦🎚

17 stab wounds is a very messy and unprofessional way to eliminate a person. So, three theories (non-exclusive):

1. Another lame attempt to put blame on Putin.

2. 17 wounds would make identification more difficult, and they would not check DNA —> Vovk is alive, Brandon wants to keep her for another day.

3. But then, anything Brandon does is messy and unprofessional...

There is a picture of her complete with blood on the site I linked.

I equate the vicious 17 stabs to how much anger Russians had about her heinous crime. Russian troops have been marking every rocket or missile they are firing with tributes to Daria.

And they didn’t take the body. They left it to be found. There is a message in that for Ukraine.

Our source in the OP said that MI6 passed on intelligence to the Office of the President that the FSB has all the facts indicating the involvement of Vovk/Shaban in the terrorist act. Yermak was advised to distance himself from this murder so as not to discredit Ukraine in the international arena, but to clean up the perpetrators and curators.

Russians like to make crazy to mess with their enemies minds. They might try to divert this plants electricity to Russia. Putin is pulling a big winter energy squeeze to make Europe cave in on his Ukraine aggression. Russian Zaporizhzhia nuke plant shenanigans is part of it. A pre-winter gas shutoff nudge nudge nudge to Europe. A prequel of Putin's winter games.

1. The publication (Express) is low-quality version of Daily Mail.
2. The picture was taken from a 2020 article in a Russian paper (that talked about a totally different murder).
3. The Austrian officials denied knowing anything about the alleged murder.

Basically, this is a fake.

Totally debunked by War on Fakes.

But Cut-and-Paste Cathi doesn’t care.

A lie is as good as the truth so long as you keep repeating it.

Same with all the other Putlerites that show up here - same posts over and over and over and over and over again. No independent thought, just parroting whatever Moscow tells them to say and hurling insults at anyone who calls them out on it.

So keep calling out Cut-and-Paste Cathi. It really pisses her off!
