I read about something similar where US Special Forces candidates were training in the rural countryside but no one gave the local law enforcement a heads up.

A deputy spotted several of the candidates in a vehicle acting strange and made a stop.

The candidates thought it was part of the training and decided to jump the deputy.

The deputy "won" but sadly, at least one of the SF candidates was killed.

I think that was a ROBIN SAGE exercise. Normally the local LEOs are in on the exercise, but this deputy was new and when the SF guys pointed empty weapons at him, he responded with live ammo.
