Pin pricks don’t win wars/conflicts and if this is ALL the Ukrainians have left against those dastardly Ruzzians, not looking good for Ukraine, at all, especially given that nearly every Ukrainian counter-offensive they have committed has resulted in disaster.....

True it is. But, I believe a “cotton” also refers to the of ‘bomb’ because of the huge clouds of smoke and gas that form after the explosion.

It’s not great for the Russians either. They have paid a huge price to take over areas with no economic production and, ummmm, real estate value issues.

John Larroquette, an actor, once gave this definition of insanity:

“It’s the repetition of the same action expecting different results. Like jumping out of a 40-storey building, breaking every bone, spending six months in hospital, going back to the same building, up to the 39th floor, jumping and expecting it to be different. It is NEVER different.”

Russian commanders keep doing the same things over and over, because their superiors keep ordering the same things over and over.

At airports and bridges.

The result is consistent. Ukraine expects troop or resource movements at certain bridges and airports, and then blows them up.

I’m not saying the Russian soldiers are insane. Far from it - the same errors were made by both sides in World War 1. We had a lot of war diaries and poetry confirming it.

Seems to me that Russian commanders (like in World War 1) can’t think of doing anything smarter than throwing resources and people into the same meat grinders over and over, hoping for a different result. Their plans are utterly dependent on the Ukes failing to hit targets on bridges or in airports that they’ve had months of practice on.

Definition of insanity, in action.

Gun cotton was an old form of explosive. But it can be very dangerous. It is possible to make it, but not practical to use for small arms. I reload.

Black powder is also easily made from scratch, but it is corrosive. And it is often an unstable compound. (precision issue)

Black powder gets around the issue of pressure containment by having all loads compressed, no void space in the barrel or in the brass cartridge if it is not a muzzle loader.

“Russian commanders keep doing the same things over and over”

Their culture reinforces that they rigidly stick to their rulebook/playbook, or they get weeded out from promotion.

The Ukrainians know the Russian playbook as well as the Russians themselves, so they can well predict what to expect.

“Gun cotton was an old form of explosive. But it can be very dangerous.”

You are far more knowledgeable than I.
I have noticed many Ukrainian photographs and reports do appear to reference the huge “cotton” clouds that form following the bombing. But, maybe I just view the images that way.

Actually the use of the word “cotton” by Ukrainians is to mock the Russians:

“ridiculing Russian media use of a word хлопóк (a bang) in a sense of explosion, which is written in the same way as cotton - хлóпок”

Russia was supposed to have been able to take Ukraine in a month yet here we are. Russia has showed the world how weak and pathetic their armed forces are.
