Japan is entering a new phase in its nuclear energy strategy, with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida ordering the development and construction of next-generation nuclear power plants on Wednesday.
This marks a major shift from the country's post-Fukushima policy of backing away from the building of new nuclear power plants. The move would help Japan reduce its reliance on energy imports amid a global energy crunch and avoid strains on a power grid that has been pushed to its limit this summer.
Kishida's administration aims to secure electric power in the medium to long term with a plan to restart up to 17 nuclear power plants beginning in the summer of 2023.
The prime minister believes the plan will address structural challenges facing Japan, such as electricity shortages and decarbonization delays, especially as it aims to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Detailed measures and a timeline for implementation will be outlined by the government by the end of the year.
The main objective going forward from 2030 will be to consider construction of next-generation nuclear power plants. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has already compiled a draft on such plants -- specifically safer, light water reactors -- with plans to start commercial operation in the 2030s.

Just make sure to place the backup diesel generators above Tsunami wave levels this time. Or perhaps just away and up a hill from the plant.
Japan sited those plants there because it’s Japan’s Appalachia.
Bet the new plants will go up there, too.
Best to build reactors that don’t need backup generators.
Good to see Japan backing off the anti-nuke hysteria.
One of the reasons the left hates nuclear power is because it short circuits their green war on powering modern civilization.
Japan is restarting idled reactors and talking about new construction.
Sounds less like backing off and more like a modified limited hangout.
Japan already has a passively safe reactor design, the Westinghouse Toshiba AP1000, that does not require backup Diesel generators for safe shutdown. Four units are in commercial operation in China, and two units are nearing completion in the U.S. No need to wait for 2030 for a “next generation” design.
Maybe they will put the diesel tanks for the back up generators INSIDE the protective barrier walls of the power plant this time. That failure at Fukushima was caused due to that specific error. If the fuels tanks had been inside the wall that meltdown would have never happened.
Japan is not willing to sacrifice its economy to Gaia.
Will the Europeans learn anything from this?
Nobody!!!
Died at Fukushima from nukes.
All people died from the earthquake.
The only people who died afterwards were the people who were evacuated and died from the evacuation effects - scared to death of maybe old people who really could not be transported.
Doubtful ... Angela Merkel should swing for closing their nukes and started relying on Russian natural gas. How stupid can one get? Your idea of survival is buying things you absolutely need from a (potential) enemy?
I swear I don’t know how people who think like that can walk and breathe at the same time. And the Xiden junta is full of them also.
Critic will look backward, supporters will seek and find what is new and how what is new will make positive changes.
I hope they put containment domes over them.🙄
Just build ABOVE the tsunami line!!!
