The initial tsunami wave created by the eruption of the underwater Hunga Tonga Ha'apai volcano in Tonga in January 2022 reached 90 meters in height, around nine times taller than that from the highly destructive 2011 Japan tsunami, new research has found.
An international research team says the eruption should serve as a wake-up call for international groups looking to protect people from similar events in future, claiming that detection and monitoring systems for volcano-based tsunamis are '30 years behind' comparable tools used to detect earthquake-based events.
Dr. Mohammad Heidarzadeh, Secretary-General of the International Tsunami Commission and a senior lecturer in the University of Bath's Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering, authored the research alongside colleagues based in Japan, New Zealand, the UK and Croatia.
By comparison, the largest tsunami waves due to earthquakes before the Tonga event were recorded following the Tōhoku earthquake near Japan in 2011 and the 1960 Chilean earthquake, reached 10 meters in initial height. Those were more destructive as they happened closer to land, with waves that were wider.

Matter of fact, a whole lot of the volcanoes along the Cascade range are at elevated levels by the USGS. Higher than Yellowstone.
The USGS is actually a pretty good outfit considering, on that respect.
If I remember right. The largest eruption in the 20 century was Nova Erupta (SIC) in Alaska.
I am not going to do searches on the dam thing. Just what I remember with discussions with the geologist professors I used to know.
These guys chomp at the bit to get on one after its safe after an eruption to study minerals those things bring up.

The largest, most nasty storm ever recorded. Killed over 270 sailors and sunk quite a few ships.

IMO, the most dangerous volcano in the world right now is Campi Flegrei at Naples Italy.
That thing is caped with a type of ash that the Romans supposed to have used for cement. So the pressure is building and when it goes, it could go without much of a warning.
I have read that there are spots around there that are really hot. This april, there was a huge algae bloom that turned the sea red around there. What made this one so unusual is that the bloom was of a type that thrives in real warm water. Making them think the volcano is becoming even more active. That thing is a super volcano.
