Russia's military has praised civilian grade Chinese-made drones and robots for having performed well on the battlefield, leading their manufacturers to point out the equipment is not intended or sold for military purposes.

When a video of a robot camera dog showed up with a grenade launcher on Russian state-sponsored media RIA Novosti this week, many immediately recognized it as Chinese Unitree Robotics' $2,700 Go1 robotic dog – albeit dressed in a sort of canine ninja suit.

"Russian designers presented a sample of the M-81 robotic complex, capable of aimed shooting and transporting weapons, at the Army-2022 forum," announced RIA Novosti in Russian, before claiming the bot belonged to engineering company JSC "Intellect of Machines."

RIA Novosti went on to describe the Boston Dynamics Spot analog as capable of both reconnaissance and combat missions, plus tasks like delivering medicines and weapons amongst rubble, conducting targeted fire, or just patrolling.

Ukraine forces used DJI drones as well.

Not so sure you can pick up a grenade-capable robot dog for only $2,700 though ... “Chinese Unitree Robotics’ $2,700 Go1 robotic dog”

The outcome of the next war might be who has the better hacker (software and hardware) army.

China already has one leg up; they have a lot of embedded chips into products sold in America.

Over manufacturer protests?

That seems silly.

I would not expect Dodge to tell me what I can use my Ram truck for.

This war has shown that given the new technologies much of the equipment and tactics used by most of the world’s military are obsolete. Large armored vehicles and almost all naval surface combatants cannot hope to survive in modern conflicts. The technical weapons being deployed in Ukraine such as these Chinese drones are rudimentary. The more sophisticate systems are truly devastating.

YES!!!

Looks good, but the batteries are always dead when you really need to use them.

“We sent the robot dog out on patrol last night, but the dog’s battery caught fire and it is still burning as we speak.”

Russia will no doubt be praying that any of this equipment they get from China works better than the tires that were used on the trip to Kiev last winter. I still remember a picture of a Ukrainian houswife batting a small drone out of the sky from her apartment window, lol. Like the Spanish Civil War in the later 1930s, two sides are testing and learning how to use new equipment and new tactics. Meanwhile Russia is using up its military supplies faster than the west with less capacity to replace them. With open societies and freedom for creativity, the West will probably win the technical war for the future.

Russia should really be praying that Comrade Xi now knowing how stretched and ineffective are Russia’s conventional forces, is not temped to invade and seize Russia’s rich underpopulated Asian Pacific territories and even Siberia. An invasion of those areas would be more likely to succeed than an invasion of Taiwan across 90 miles of open ocean. Russia would be much smaller without nuclear weapons.

I wonder how many nuclear silos or other nuke facilities are in the area(s) Xi might most likely try to occupy?
