I still contend this was our first free speech test for the USA, and we failed.

No one suggests a war over him. But the the de factor/ reality of anti infidel war
(from radicals Sunni or Shiite) has been going on for long.
“I guess we should send another pallet of money.”

Indeed. And Obama did it behind everyone’s back.

“From what I understand, cymbeline, it wasn’t the sexual passages that offended Muslims.”
Very enlightening post. Thanks!
You say Muslims were a minority in Mecca when the first half of the Koran was written. Who was creating the content of that half?
I don’t see why imaginative and literary people can’t also be people of moral courage.
“The very title of the book is a reference to the the voices heard by Mohamed.”
Yes, but more specifically it is what Moslems call a few specific verses in the Koran that they believe were delivered to Mohammed by a demon instead of the angel who they believe delivered the rest of the Koran. Yes, it’s a strange dogma, but they actually believe that the greatest prophet to ever live was deceived by a demon, and that their god allowed it to happen, and those verses were placed into their holiest book and remain there to this day, though they are “abrogated” by verses that were recorded later.
“I don’t see why imaginative and literary people can’t also be people of moral courage.”
They can but Rushdie hasn’t been a crusader or firebrand.
Do you have to be a crusader or firebrand to have moral courage?
“Do you have to be a crusader or firebrand to have moral courage?”
Depends whether you’re on the offensive or defensive.
If you’re defending yourself or others, that’s not being a crusader.
If you’re attempting to change the world then you’re a crusader.
Well, if you are the one being threatened to not say something or be killed, then it would seem by definition you are on the defensive, not on offense.

He wasn’t on the defensive until he inserted the goody whoppers into his book.
