Panasonic to increase EV battery production for Tesla by 10%
Nikkei Asia ^

OSAKA -- Panasonic Holdings will boost production of the electric vehicle batteries it supplies to Tesla by about 10% by 2024.

The Japanese company announced in July that it will also build its second EV battery plant in the U.S. in Kansas, but the factory is not expected to be operating until 2024 at the earliest.

Panasonic plans to meet increased battery demand in the interim by sending production supervisors from Japan to its existing U.S. factory and improving efficiency there.

By June, dozens of people had been sent to the Gigafactory 1 in Nevada, a joint operation between Tesla and Panasonic, to provide technical assistance and training.

Their task is to reduce equipment problems and boost production by approximately 10% -- the equivalent of about one production line. The plant's eventual production capacity is expected to be about 43 gigawatt-hours per year.

...

Panasonic already makes batteries for Tesla at its factory in Osaka, where it has many engineers. The company plans to raise the production efficiency of its U.S. plants "to reach the level of our domestic factories" by transferring know-how, said an executive,

With some EV battery fires, does the insurance companies increase rates to pay?

Uh, gasoline cars catch on fire frequently, too. So, no.

Questuon:
Can the lithium metal in expired EV battery packs be recycled more efficiently and effectively than mining raw lithium out of the ground?

I checked. Okay, but they do cost more in premiums , but only because they are more expensive.

Lithium is being recycled already by Redwood Materials Inc., a company founded by a Tesla co-founder. They have partnerships with several auto manufacturers to recycle lithium battery packs.

Lithium is abundant and sourced from salt water ponds, oil wells and sea water. It isn’t mined like other minerals that you’re thinking of.

ICE cars do not spontaneously combust anywhere near as frequently as lithium ion battery cars.

It’s mainly hybrid cars that catch fire frequently, not full EV’s.

Panasonic makes great car batteries. My 2005 Honda S2000 came with one and it lasted over 10 years. Every other car battery I’ve had here in NM lasts less than 4. Unfortunately, it was a Japan only item, not available here.

EV rates average 15-25% higher than ICE primarily due to the cost of the batteries, secondarily the higher vehicle price tags (according to industry reports I just read, and it varies widely by insurer. So, drop the kneejerk reaction because it’s not my point).

The greatest unknown to EV owners is not insurance rates themselves, but whether the policy will pay out on a battery-caused fire in the future.

The effects of the sinking of the M/V Felicity Ace continue to reverberate in an industry wary of true risks in the face of both the EV manufacturing industry and government alike actively gaslighting the public as to said risk.

In the absence of vastly greater cooperation from battery/EV manufacturers and government, the insurance industry will eventually either unilaterally raise EV rates or exclude battery-caused fire as a covered peril and, unfortunately, such dramatic change will likely arise as a result of a widely publicized tragedy you will all likely read about here at FR.

You can take that to the bank.

How many batteries have they recycled and put back in the market for use? How much ($) is a recycled battery vs a new battery? What is the life of a recycled battery vs a new battery?
