What’s wrong with “teacher”? My dad told me it was a union thing. The idea was that to elevate the profession (and make room for higher dues), the union apes thought "EH-jiew-kay-tor" sounded more elevated than the term then (and still) in use, which is pronounced "TEE-chuh."
