CAIRO, Aug 14 (Reuters) - An electrical fire swept through an Egyptian Coptic Christian church during Mass on Sunday, causing a stampede and killing at least 41 people, most of them children and many suffering from smoke inhalation.
The blaze started just before 9 a.m. in the Abu Sifin church in the city of Giza where about up to 1,000 people had gathered.
The fire blocked an entrance to the church, causing the stampede, the two sources said, adding that most of those killed were children.

🤔
Whenever you are at a large public gathering in an unfamiliar place, always look for a second operational exit just in case. If you are in a room (like a basement) where there is only one way in and out, sit near the exit. In panic situations, people will blindly try to escape through the door they came in at— and so will everyone else and that’s how exits get blocked and people get trampled, even though other exits are available.
Our local Catholic Church is lucky to get 50 people for a Sunday Mass.
I’ve seen 3rd world wiring, so I’m not surprised, although a fire that blocks the only exit and happens during a church service is very suspicious.
That’s sad to hear. Our local Catholic Church holds several hundred people and with 8 weekend masses is almost always full. We have other parishes close by and it is similar there.
Dreadful. RIP.
