We sell Abrams to Egypt and Saudi Arabia. If they can figure it out the Ukes should be able to.

But they haven't been fighting anyone lately.

With all the money and military aid sent by the West, Ukraine should have had by now a significant air arm and modern drone forces at relatively secure Western Ukraine bases. Apparently they don’t. Why? Modern drones would make Russian positions near Kherson very dangerous. Massed infantry/armor assaults in the modern technological era are suicidal. The lines now appear to be relatively static which suggests they may be close to a deal to end this war.

In this particular case Russia is determined to recoup Ukraine and if I would make a bet I think they will pull it off. It’s not like losing out on Afghanistan what they just shrugged off as they didn’t feel it was worth it. Let’s hope they never feel they may be on the losing end having to put up with these war mongering bastards in DC, as this will be the day WHEN THIS CONFLICT WILL TURN HOT. In all reality Russia could have ended this conflict in about 72 hours as they have the ways and means to do it, but they been showing a lot of restrained to avoid unnecessary casualties.

If they are close to a deal to end the war, that would be great in my opinion. We will see.

Russia is fighting in a restrained manner

To what degree is the fighting and disturbance of the nuclear plant affecting moves by either side?

I honestly don’t know the answer to that question. I’m aware of the nuke power plant issue, and apparent attacks near/on it, but I haven’t looked into the issue much.

Ukrainian soldiers hunker down from an escalating onslaught of artillery, with little ability to advance.

Lots of luck hunkering down. The Russians have increased the use of the TOS=1A Hyperbaric missiles. These things tend to make your insides come out of your body orifices even if they're underground in their rats nests..

Just outside of Peskiv.

"If the Ukrainians don’t stop their INSANE artillery shelling of the largest nuclear power plant in Europe they are going to have to worry about a lot more than Russian control of the east and south of Ukraine."

****************************************************

Ultimate sour grapes by the Ukes. "If we can't have this land we will poison it for everyone."

Russia will consider this potential new Chernobyl to be a first use of WMD against them. Their response might be overwhelming. Nothing will be off the table if the Ukes blow up that nuke.

Seeing the devastating effects of these Fuel/Air missiles, I can’t believe they can keep soldiers in front line positions. It’s almost slaughter. In WWII, the story goes that when the Crocodile flamethrower tanks forward, the guys in the pill boxes were likely to surrender without a fight.

The Ukrainians should have cut a deal a month ago, and I’ll make this claim: The HIMARS and other upgrades sent haven’t improved anything in a military sense, and this recent shelling of a Nuke power plant just makes it more urgent to the Russians to crush their enemy. It is turning into the Battle of Berlin times 10.

“fighting and disturbance of the nuclear plant [Zaporizhzhia plant] affecting moves by either side?”

Russian troops took over the Zaporizhzhia plant in southern Ukraine, one of the 10 largest nuclear plants in the world, shortly after invading the country in February. Before the war, the plant accounted for about half the electricity generated by nuclear power in Ukraine.

Ukraine’s Interior Minister Denys Monastyrskyi said that there is “no adequate control over operations at the plant.”

Monastyrskyi said Ukrainian specialists working at the plant are not always allowed in the areas they should be. He said the Ukrainian government has appealed to the International Atomic Energy Agency to ensure proper control of the plant, adding that his office is “preparing for any scenario.”

Rafael Grossi, the U.N.’s nuclear chief, said both nations need to immediately allow nuclear experts to assess damage to the plant and evaluate its safety and security.

The situation there “has been deteriorating very rapidly,” he said. At least one nuclear reactor was forced to shut down last week after shelling and explosions at the plant shut down the electrical power transformer and two backup transformers.

Commenting on comments:

1) Neither side will believe the other in any negotiated peace, so it will not happen. A military coup against Zelinsky by his generals, who will eventually not be able to endure sending their lifetime friends to die. A military junta will likely run the country for 10+ yrs.

2) Satellite recon is everything. This is the first war in the history of mankind where both sides have excellent satellite recon access. You cannot mass troops anywhere, flat or not, forested or not, without being seen and targeted.

3) Item #2 transforms the very nature of war. Defense has always had a natural advantage in war, shorter supply lines, shorter communication lines. No longer. Offense can move from where they were last seen by satellites. Defense is defending a location. They cannot move. They are hit by artillery.

4) Make no mistake in this. Satellites are far more important than weapons. You can make any weapons work just fine when you know the precise lat/long of a target.

5) And no, drones do not replace. They aren’t particularly valuable as supplements — for the obvious reason that they can be jammed. Bidirectional signals need only be jammed in one direction. You do not have to break any specific encoded data stream in either direction. It suffices to overwhelm the signal strength at the known frequencies. Drone footage being seen is small potatoes. The big targets, far behind lines, are out of drone range, and certainly out of jammed signal range.

If the Ukrainians don’t stop their INSANE artillery shelling of the largest nuclear power plant in Europe they are going to have to worry about a lot more than Russian control of the east and south of Ukraine.

Alex Christoforou says that the buzz is that the West is pushing for the creation of a "demilitarized zone" around the plant, which would have the effect of freezing the action in Kherson Oblast, and limiting the Russian gains for the Special Military Operation to Luhansk and Donetsk.

Zaporizhzhia plant in southern Ukraine

United Nations inspectors are trying to gain access to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear complex in Ukraine, where Russia and Ukrainian authorities have traded blame for artillery strikes the UN warns could lead to “nuclear disaster.”

“Any attack (on) a nuclear plant is a suicidal thing,” U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres said at a news conference Monday, according to Reuters.

Ukraine has been launching a counter-offensive in the southern region of the country where the plant is located after Russian forces concentrated their forces on gains made in the area, resulting in the fighting around the plant. Rockets landed near a high-voltage power line in Friday’s fighting and on Saturday struck near a dry storage facility. Shelling also damaged radiation-monitoring sensors near the facility.

“This time a nuclear catastrophe was miraculously avoided, but miracles cannot last forever,” Ukraine’s state nuclear power firm Energoatom said, according to the Washington Post.

Russian and Ukraine have traded blame for the strikes, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky calling for a “stronger response from the international community.”

The situation at the plant has experts fearing the worst. Arms Control Association Executive Director Daryl Kimball warned that buildings around a nuclear facility are not designed to withstand military strikes.

“This is particularly dangerous because these buildings are not built with the same kind of reinforced concrete that the reactor containment building is,” Kimball told the Washington Post. “These places were not designed as fortresses against external missile or artillery strikes.”
Screenshot from video released by Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant shows bright flaring object landing in grounds of the nuclear plant in Enerhodar, Ukraine.

Kimball warned that a sustained loss of power at the plant could also turn deadly, noting that these power plants have “a certain number of days for which they have backup diesel power generation.”

“This is the first time in the history of the nuclear age that a major nuclear power facility for a sustained period of time is in the middle of an active war zone,” Kimball said.

Guterres’ comments come as Ukraine has warned of a Chernobyl-style catastrophe at the plant and called for it to be declared a demilitarized zone, with international watchdogs fearing an accident after two days of fighting at the plant that is occupied by Russian forces.

Air superiority and a high sortie rate counters artillery. The Ukrainians don’t have it, never will. The Russians will just keep pounding Ukrainian forces because there is little to stop them.
