An unusually high number of incumbent state legislators were defeated in last week's primary election, or they are currently losing their races. That follows a nationwide trend, at least on the Republican side of the aisle.
By the numbers: Nine incumbents lost or are losing their reelection campaigns in the primary.
Sens. Vince Leach (R), Tyler Pace (R) and Kelly Townsend (R), and Reps. Judy Burges (R), John Fillmore (R), Joel John (R), Sarah Liguori (D), Lorenzo Sierra (D) and Christian Solorio (D).
From 2010 to 2020, the highest number of incumbents who were not reelected in the primary was four.
The big picture: According to The Associated Press, 7.1% of Republican incumbent legislators and 2.8% of Democrats who sought reelection nationwide this year have lost in primaries.
In the preceding decade, the highest number was the 4.4% who lost their GOP primary elections in 2012. Of note: The AP's figures are only through Aug. 1, so they don't include Arizona.
Context: In many cases, the AP said Republican lawmakers are losing to Trump-aligned challengers who accuse them of not being conservative enough.
That phenomenon was at least partially at play in Arizona, where some of the GOP incumbents who lost were viewed as less conservative or running against opponents endorsed by Trump.

We are FED UP!!
apparently this means the end of the republican party.
or is it?
They don’t care about the primaries. The big cheat will be employed for the general.
Excellent job, Arizona!
“ apparently this means the end of the republican party.

It means the TRANSFORMATION of the Republican Party.🤗🤗👏👏
I think those results may have scared the Establishment leading to the raid. Even Rusty Bowers lost.
This is the real reason the DOJ came after Trump.
The Democrats have lost control of AZ.
I am very sad that my favorite State Senator, Kelly Townsend, was forced into a primary with Wendy Rogers, who raised millions to defeat her. Lots of sketchy financial issues with Rogers and her nephew, to whom she sent over a million $ in cash raised nationally in Trump’s name.
Speaking solely for Minnesota’s legislative primaries earlier this week, there were no big surprises.
The only incumbent knocked off was on the Dem side in the state house.
On the GOP side, no incumbents were knocked off. In primaries for an open house or senate seat, pro-Trump candidates did much better than the establishment GOP candidates.
Steve Deace talked about several strategies that turned Iowa red. The one that has stuck with me is to replace primaries with caucuses or conventions. He said some states have laws requiring primaries so those must be defeated first.
He also mentioned there were lots of puzzle pieces falling into place. But… if you want your vote to mean something that sounds like a start. Could get rid of the rinos.
PRIMARIES ARE THE BEST PLACE TO REMOVE INCUMBENTS!!!!
So few people vote in primaries. Just you and a few dozen of your closest friends can change the outcome.
One primary election I asked the workers how many people had voted- she said 26.
Not 26%, 26 people. All day. My guy lost by 3 votes, the incumbent stayed in.
Incumbents make sure everyone in their office gets out to vote.
“PRIMARIES ARE THE BEST PLACE TO REMOVE INCUMBENTS!!!!”
That’s why I’ve been posting primary reminders the day before and the day of. To at least get the FReepers to the polls.
Frankly I’ve never understood why primary vote percentages are so low. I’ve never missed a primary or a general since I was 18.
But if you’re not paying attention, they’re easy to miss.
My thoughts on the MAGA Republican near sweep in the primary.
First of all, the Republican party (with the help of us independents) finally killed off the John McCain control of the state party.
Second, the Republican party, at least the conservative Republicans and the independents are really fed up with Biden’s (or the puppetmaster’s) policies, especially the border & energy policies.
Third, no GOPe or Vichy-Republicans need apply.
Now, come November 8 we shall see if we are a Conservative State or we, like Colorado before us, too Californicated to keep normal people here
Former AZ Gov, Jan Brewer, is pissed that her establishment candidate, Karren Robeson Taylor, lost to Kari Lake in the Republican Gov primary, so now she’s running around Arizona saying that she’ll endorse Lake only if she denounces her talk of the election being stolen.
I’m disappointed in Brewer. I knew she was establishment but not to that point. She has an overblown sense of importance, If her endorsement didn’t get Taylor the primary win then why in hell does she think her endorsement could help anyone else.
(sad trombone)

Waah-Waah!
I had not heard about Brewer attempt to coerce Kari into retracting her statement. If true, Brewer dropped way down in my opinion of her.
I am of the opinion, the Mrs Lake really wants to do something about the border, honest elections and good governance. Only time will tell.
If you live near Tucson tune into 790am KNST 6-10am. Garret Lewis is a very conservative, activist talk show host and he’s on top of everything in Arizona. I listen to him via the computer/iheart radio in the morning. That’s where I heard about Jan Brewer.
